UMinn vs. UDel for ChemE

I wanted to get the opinions of the people on this forum so as to not completely shut the other side out. I posted this on the general forum and the consensus was that UMN was the better choice...I just would like to get a diverse set of opinions.

Anyways, I've been accepted to both in the ChemE program (Honors at UDel). Received decently generous scholarships from both schools, and counting just tuition/room+board and going off last year's rates, the COA for each would be:

Minn-$21,000/year
Del-$27,000/year

I've visited Del and will be visiting Minn in a couple weeks (I live in Virginia btw). From what I know already, this is what I'm thinking about the advantages of both: (may be misguided on a few, hence why I'd like to make sure I'm accurately judging)

Minn: Better overall academics, higher ChemE ranking, Minneapolis has more to do than Newark, more opportunities for internships/careers, cheaper

Del: Smaller size, much warmer weather year round, closer (more of my parents' concern), safer than Minneapolis, Honors program benefits

As this is a critical decision, I'd like to be sure that my judgments about both are accurate, as well as get some feedback from those who have experience with UDel, especially since it seems like the less "logical" choice as of now if you just consider numbers.

ipepper, If I recall correctly from your posts on the Pitt forum, you don’t like cold weather and cities that much. You might really enjoy the surroundings at UD because the campus is beautiful, the climate is moderate, and its a suburban area.

UD’s Chem E is supposed to be highly ranked and benefits from a relationship with DuPont. I’m not an expert on the various rankings, but here is a link to what UD publishes about their “rank” [Department Statistics : CHEMICAL ENGINEERING at the University of Delaware, Newark, DE](http://www.che.udel.edu/stats.html)

I think you’ll have more of a feel for the comparison after you visit U MN. Although- it might have been better for you to visit MN in the winter…Good luck in your decision!

@pamom - I guess my tastes have changed in that span of time, hahah. While the extremely cold weather seems like it would be a doozy compared to the climate of Delaware, I’m sure I’d be able to manage it. Plus, I think that Minneapolis seems more lively and vibrant than Pittsburgh, so it’s a big city that I’d actually enjoy being in.

I’ve heard about the relationship between Delaware and DuPont, as that was one of the main reasons I chose to apply there as well as MN (since they have the same relationship with 3M). Definitely excited to visit so that I have an accurate picture of both…hope it works out for the best!

Pittsburgh???

I think he said Pittsburgh because if a reference to the Pitt Forum.

Anyway, if it was me, I’d choose Delaware because it’s closer and the weather is so much better. Of course I live in Delaware so I’m biased :). I’m also a fan of being driving distance from home instead of flying. And ChemE at Delaware is definitely considered a strong program.

Good luck!
