UMKC 6-year BS/MD Program

I see…thanks for input THankins and doctor2b

also does anyone know of the research/internship situation in the 6 year prog. at UMKC? I couldn’t find any info when I checked their website…

just for some more perspective…

my sister’s in the program & the summer semesters can be really tough like when you have to take microbiology and neuro together

so don’t underestimate how difficult it’s gonna be
good luck!!

doctor2b, the importance is not the number of classes but the number of hours. Students in the BA/MD program at UMKC are taking nearly 22 credit hours each semester (this is assuming they’re doing the liberal arts degree and not the other degrees, where it is a mandatory requirement that you come in with transfer/testing credit)

Also, it’s not just ONE summer, you don’t get ANY summers off in the entire program. The first summer you are taking nearly 9 credit hours (normal in the summer is 6 hours) with 2 sciences Organic Chem with Lab and Cell Biology all in an 8 week summer.

Don’t knock about how “easy” you THINK the program is, when you really don’t know. aleisha786, is on target with her post.

Also doctor2b, you didn’t read the website properly as it’s not just “you’re taking 4 classes max, just like any other undergrad student.”

[University</a> of Missouri - Kansas City](<a href=“http://www.med.umkc.edu/med_admissions/BAMD_curriculum.shtml]University”>http://www.med.umkc.edu/med_admissions/BAMD_curriculum.shtml)

So for example Fall Year 1:

Under Medicine you take:
Medical Terminology - 1 credit hour
Learning Basic Medical Sciences - 1 credit hour
Fundamentals of Medical Practice I - 5 credit hours

Under Arts and Sciences you take:
Human Biology I (Anatomy) w/Lab - 4 hours
General Chemistry I w/Lab - 5 hours
General Psychology - 3 hours
Courses for B.A. degree* - meaning the rest of your required Bachelor coursework, as denoted by the word “courses”

Most of the time you’re limited to 22 credit hours in one semester, although exceptions are made to where students have to go higher than that based on the amount of credit they came in with.

So you’re taking a lot more than just 4 courses.

yeah sorry MD2B2012, you definitely know more about this than me - my bad.

i just know about what a sibling of mine went through in the penn state-jefferson 6-yr program, where everyone had a great time and wasnt stressed out much at all, but obviously umkc is different. then again, he also had about 14 AP college classes under his belt, which is approximately my situation too.

i understand that im wrong and enemyunit, you should probably listen to MD2B2012.

sorry for that

It’s no problem, doctor2b. It makes much more sense now what you were saying, as when you had mentioned about only having “an additional 1 summer”, when you check out the PennState/Jefferson Medical College combined degree program (it’s much more prestigious, that also happens to be six years) - you are correct, as in that program you can potentially get one summer off.

Having credit from 14 college AP exams will definitely lighten your load immensely no matter where you go as well, even though you do not get the grade points for those courses as part of your GPA.

So, there is a lot of talk on this forum about getting into the program, but how about some advice for someone in the program? HSF starts soon. Any advice on studying? Professors to watch out for? Thanks guys!

In regards to professors, I have always found this sight interesting, funny, and extremely helpful.

Hey does UMKC give scholarships?

Roentgen " According to this website: ACT/SAT Equivalencies - Requirements and Deadlines - Undergraduate Admissions - The University of Iowa

An SAT score of 1360 equates to a 31 on the ACT.

The website says: University of Missouri - Kansas City
“Regional and out-of-state residents: The average accepted regional or out-of-state applicant has an ACT score of 30 and high school GPA of 3.85.”

So you should be fine. UMKC tends to emphasize more holistic factors unlike the top-tier Bachelor/MD programs which want better numbers. "

r u sure they convert?

thedarknight9, it is a conversion table: [ACT/SAT</a> Equivalencies - Requirements and Deadlines - Undergraduate Admissions - The University of Iowa](<a href=“http://www.uiowa.edu/admissions/undergrad/requirements/act-conversion.html]ACT/SAT”>http://www.uiowa.edu/admissions/undergrad/requirements/act-conversion.html)

It’s obviously for out-of-staters that are more likely to have taken the SAT vs. the ACT.

Roentegen

No I understand that. I was just asking because some universities like UC Bekley and UCLA have seperate requirements for ACT and SAT. For example, they want an SAT of 2200 or 1450ish, but an ACT of 29-30. They treat the two test differently and don’t convert. So I was just wondering if that was the case for UMKC too. But you answered my question.

Thanks!

Sorry, I didn’t mean “obviously” to be rude, I meant “obviously” as in bc everyone in Missouri only takes the ACT (and for the program if you’re in-state, only the ACT is accepted), the SAT is only accepted for out-of-staters, which is when the conversion table would probably be used. That conversion chart is probably specific to Iowa.

This will probably help more, under “Admission Requirements”: [Medicine</a> 6 year](<a href=“http://web2.umkc.edu/degrees/Md.html]Medicine”>http://web2.umkc.edu/degrees/Md.html)

Of course requirements and actually receiving an acceptance are two very different things.

The 17 core requirements refer to the prerequisite courses.

Can you define ‘Holistic’ in the context that it is used here?

It looks like people will be finding out if they get an interview starting today. When you guys find out if you got an interview or not please post here. Also include if you were an out of state student or instate student.

Does anyone know around what time they would let us know if we receive an interview?

And also, do they only send out the interview requests today, or will it go on for a few days?

i think it’ll go on for a few days according to their email. “We will email and mail all decisions and offers to interview beginning January 4, 2010.” Keyword = beginning

i hope you are correct, i did not receive an email today and i’m a little nervous now lol

Meaning once you are extended an interview (thus you have gotten past whatever numbers they want for SAT/ACT and GPA/rank), it is much more heavily focused on your volunteering and extracurricular activities, so the whole package

Unlike UMKC, the top-tier combined programs can afford to be much more selective.

Hello:
I am new to this forum. I have applied to several BS/MD or direct medical acceptance programs including UMKC. I would like to know if anyone has received an offer to interview!
