UMKC 6-year BS/MD Program

To those currently practicing the MMI at home, just keep in mind at the UMKC MMI, based on how it was last year from applicants who contributed back to the CC thread, applicants DO NOT get a paper and pen to write things down to collect your thoughts from the prompt. I mention this as there are some Youtube videos that show applicants w/like a pen and a clipboard, but you will likely not get that luxury on interview day: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19316073/#Comment_19316073

quick question. there is no way to delete past comments I’ve made anymore. is there a same problem for others out there?

For UMKC oos, will it negatively impact you if you don’t take both tours? Also, has any oos applicant been accepted without taking both tours?

@Sona3599 Did you get an interview?

@Jjaa1234 You don’t have to if you have already been the campus before. No neg. impact.

@Jjaa1234, I highly recommend that all applicants (especially OOS applicants) do both tours so you know what exactly you’re getting from UMKC. They now do tours after the interview is over (vs. before as it used to be). It is optional and doesn’t factor into the process, that I know of.

So I have my interview for the BS/MD soon, what are the chances of getting in?
Also, how many questions do they typically ask/how long does an interview last?

@innieMED, you can see how it works here, which is how it worked last year: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19341227#Comment_19341227

In terms of your chances, you can see from the BA/MD FAQs here:

Hey everyone, congrats on getting an interview! I am interviewing on February 13th and I was just wondering if anyone could help me with some questions I have about the MMI. (Thanks for your help Roentgen, you are awesome!). One part that I am really confused about is how the interview starts…I guess I just can’t picture it in my mind? Will the interviewer review the scenario with us, or do we just immediately go into what we would do in that scenario? I personally feel like that will feel super awkward. I also don’t know how I should practice at home. Should I find different scenarios and practice saying what I would do? Thanks for your help in advance, and good luck to everyone that will be interviewing soon. (Just about a week, no pressure…

Hey @pohlmo, you can see it here which describes how it worked at UMKC last year: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19341227#Comment_19341227. The interviewer doesn’t review the scenario with you. You read it from a prompt (about 1-2 minutes to read and process it) and then you go inside and discuss it with the interviewer (about 6-7 minutes). Each station usually deals with a specific “competency” that they’re trying to test thru the MMI

I would practice with different sample questions (it’s in my link that I’ve posted previously - just go to that specific section). Maybe have your parents act as your interviewer to hear your answers and evaluate things like body language, how coherent your thoughts are, etc:http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19268121/#Comment_19268121. It effectively looks like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOVbDD9lNjE.

I know around 300-325 people are invited for interview.

Is any one has an idea how many people are invited from each pool (in-state, regional and OOS)?

@sampil, I would think they would be in the same proportions as the final matriculating class: http://med.umkc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/pie_chart.png, with in-state being the largest, but that’s a complete wild guess on my part. I’m not sure how that matters in terms of individual approach for the MMI, with everything else being tabulated already, but whatever.

@Roentgen, Thank you. Want to check the acceptance rate from each pool so I can see my chances at UMKC

What are the odds of there being a station of the MMI where you have to do some acting? I am terrible at acting and I know I would do terrible at one of those…

@pohlmo, I don’t know about acting, per se, but there is a possibility of some of those type of scenarios. I wouldn’t think it would be like every station though. It’s just one possibility.

The Youtube videos I’ve listed in the link previously address this also. The point is to stay calm and not go into it thinking you’re getting acting points. Do what you think an ideal physician would do.

To parents who are wondering about questions to ask to thoroughly evaluate the UMKC BA/MD program, this question was asked last year by a parent on the CC forum which you can see answer to here. It had to be split into 2 parts because of character limits.

Part 1: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19349069/#Comment_19349069

Part 2: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19349070/#Comment_19349070

You can see the UMKC BA/MD FAQ questions and answers: http://med.umkc.edu/bamd/faqs/

There is also a “35 Questions I Wish I had Asked” from the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC):
https://dornsife.usc.edu/assets/sites/1/docs/advising/prehealth/New_Logo-35_Questions.pdf

How were the interviews for those who had their’s today? Please share any information on the events that occurred and tips for future applicants.

Re: UMKC - suggest not sharing much info on CC - other than generic info. They clearly mentioned during the interview yesterday that they are always on CC reading other people’s comments. Just a word of caution

Agreed. I’ve mentioned previously last year for people to not share actual MMI questions/scenarios in this thread. Not like it matters, because there are several MMIs cycles going on at once, so it wouldn’t surprise me if each one had different questions but tested on the same competencies, as they can switched up very easily. Everything else can be shared re: interview day as was done very well last year which helps clarify any confusion and what people should accept.
