UMKC 6-year BS/MD Program

Congrats to those that got in, and good luck to everyone else. The vast majority of medical students go the conventional route, so you’ll be in good company.

Are you at UMKC right now? If so, we are in the same class.

Did you really choose UMKC simply to avoid the MCAT? If so, I agree, that was a costly mistake.

The Scunyon, please see my Post #1550.

I originally entered the UMKC program directly after high school in Fall 2004. I jumped the Titanic before it crashed into the iceberg and right in good time. I am now at UPenn for medical school. The 2012 date is when I’ll graduate from UPenn. I have absolutely no regrets in leaving the program whatsoever, except in probably entering UMKC in the first place. The only thing that sells about UMKC, for high school students, is not having to take the MCATs, and then the six year aspect (That’s why high schoolers do these programs in the first place obviously). I don’t know ANYONE (who entered in high school) that went there bc they thought UMKC’s BA/MD program was top-rate. We all did it for a ticket to medical school.

If for example, they had applied or gotten into combined programs at Brown and Northwestern, they would definitely not have gone to UMKC.

Just got my letter today. I got in. I’m a regional from illinois.

For those who live close to Kansas City or one of the other University of Missouri schools (Columbia, St. Louis, Rolla), if you have not finished your Chemistry credit, I highly suggest taking it at these schools in the summer (At UMKC, you can take Chem I (1st 4 weeks) with Lab and then enroll in Chem II (2nd 4 weeks) with Lab if you want to). This is the ONLY way you can count these courses towards your GPA. Since you are not a UMKC med student till the fall, you would be classified as a College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate student and thus would pay less per credit hour than when you enroll in the fall and are classified as a School of Medicine student.

Taking the course/courses at a community college or another university not part of the University of Missouri system, do not get counted as part of the GPA. Only credit is given: [University of Missouri - Kansas City : Transfer and External Sources of Credit](http://www.umkc.edu/catalog/2008-09/undergraduate/pg8.html)

If you have already taken the AP Chemistry test in the past (some of you may have taken it Junior year) and got a 3 or higher, you can enroll in Chem 320: Elementary Organic Chemistry in the summer and Chem 320 Lab (which you can enroll in the summer or do it later on in the year, after you’ve finished the lecture since they are separate courses) or the equivalent at another university. If you already have AP Chem credit, I would only enroll in Lecture for now so you can concentrate on one subject and take the lab later during a full semester.

kheema513 - when did you find out the decision about the Conley Scholars Program?

got my acceptance letter in the mail today! i live in st louis. congrats to everyone else who got in!

ahhhh didnt make it, but congrats to all of you who did

waitlisted here, or alternate list, im a regional student from IL too…anyone else on the alternate list?

waitlisted oos
does anyone know if they already have a ranking of their waitlisted students or if we can send them additional information?

High hope I heard back late April. I didn’t get an interview so that’s why I heard then. If you get an interview you hear back April 27th

Waitlisted or Not Accepted to UMKC? Consider it a blessing in disguise.

You avoided wasting $243,018 (regional) or $321,554 (out-of-state) respectively on a
third tier university for undergraduate education (#165 to be exact on Slide 5):
https://www.umkc.edu/strategicPlanning/documents/Rankings_Presentation.ppt</a>
and not even ranked in USWNR on either list for medical schools (unlike its MD counterparts Mizzou, WUSTL, and SLU)

The only way I could possibly see UMKC as being a good deal (only from a financial standpoint), is if you were in-state. As far as quality: WUSTL, SLU, Mizzou are much better funded.

hi everyone! i havent really participated in this thread, but i’ve been following it and have found the information very valuable.

i got in! congratulations to everyone that did and i look forward to seeing you guys sometime soon.

I had a question about financial aid. Does anyone know when and whether out of state ppl get any financial aid? I sent in the fafsa and all, but i havent’ heard from umkc in regards to it. is this normal? what about oos scholarships?

nkhullar, please see my previous post: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1061974127-post1937.html</a>

You will get a letter listing the federal financial aid you were able to qualify for if any. You accept or reject each specific one. Most of it will be loans or work study. I do not know of any OOS scholarships from UMKC which are open to out-of-state UMKC medical students.

You DO have to sign a statement reading “Out-of-state residents applying to this program agree to the non-resident fee payment and other fees paid by resident students for a full six years or longer if individual circumstances require and agree not to apply for or otherwise claim entitlement to any UMKC non-resident scholarship.”

Also look at the FAQs:
http://www.med.umkc.edu/med_admissions/FAQs2009.pdf</a>

Go to section “How do I afford Med School?”

As said before, you’ll get a sheet from the UMKC Cashier’s Office which has taken into consideration your FAFSA processed (and the calculated “need” based on your parent’s income), and see anything you qualified for.

Can you get any merit based scholarship for UMKC 6yr medical program? If so, how do you apply?

HappytoGraduate, does this letter detailing the financial aid status come before or after i submit my intent to register and initial deposit?

In the acceptance packet, there was a booklet which had a few pages that showed the estimated cost of attendance. This was very generalized and nonspecefic. this isnt what you’re talking about, is it?

also, do you know if out of state applicants get any federal aid at all? (since it is a missouri state school and what not).

From the FAQ:

“The UMKC School of Medicine has limited number of $10,000 scholarships (renewable for a second $10,000 for Year 2). Because all students admitted to the UMKC School of Medicine are meritorious, awards are based on need. In order to be considered for a scholarship applicants should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February 1.”

I do not know of any UMKC merit based scholarships in which UMKC med students are eligible to apply for. UMKC, in general, and the School of Medicine is not well funded by the state (see several previous posts back that highlight this - I think someone even linked an article as well) which is why they are heavily dependent on tuition from the medical school. Most of the scholarships available at UMKC if you see the previous link which if you click and go to the UMKC Scholarships page — exclude medical students from being able to apply.

In general with respect to federal aid for out-of-state students, the only thing I know students have gotten is work study - and that only covers like $1,000 which is a drop in the bucket when compared to out-of-state tuition. If anything else, you’ll get loans (but those have aggregate limits) with a low interest rate like Stafford, etc. but not really anything else.

I would call Cashiers and see if they can send over or fax you a copy of your actual Financial Aid letter (no what you got was probably just a brochure) to see exactly what aid you will get - they should definitely have this information by now.
[UMKC Cashiers Office - Fee Structure](<a href=“Cashiers Office | Cashiers | University of Missouri - Kansas City”>Cashiers Office | Cashiers | University of Missouri - Kansas City)

From the FAQ link above, they do have one apparently, but it’s not based on merit, it’s based on need (as calculated by the FAFSA - sorry having to pay out-of-state tuition alone doesn’t qualify as “need”)

I will post again my previous post:

The AAMC website (the Monetary Decisions link) is really helpful.

You have one month to thoroughly evaluate your decision on whether to attend the program (by May 1st I imagine). Don’t rush. If you’ve already researched and decided that you will go to to UMKC no matter what, then I think the AAMC website will be even more helpful.
