UMKC or Drexel

MD2B2012, I wonder if your strongly negative opinions of Drexel are colored by some bad experience you had? Seems likely.

Anyways, just as Whatsupdoc said, med school is what you make of it. If you are AOA with a 250 step 1, it doesnt matter if you are from HMS or __________ (insert perceived crappy med school here), you’re going to get to handpick where you want to go for residency. My father in law is highly involved in the admissions process for a competitive CT surgery fellowship/gen surg residency in the Northeast and I learned from him first hand that your alma mater has little bearing on your prospects of getting into competitive residencies and fellowships. It’s all about the numbers you have accumulated during your 4 years, which are derived from standardized tests for the most part. So in a nutshell, choose the school that you personally enjoyed and will give you the best shot at achieving your goals. I know a few recent Drexel alums and they sure have done well for themselves career-wise. At the same time, I would admonish you to be careful with student debt which Drexel unfortunately has a notsogreat reputation for. It is essential that you set yourself up for financial success after medical school.

About US News rankings: those things are useless. I have family that go to UMDNJ-NJMS which is not ranked and their match list is wonderful year after year.
