Maybe I shouldn't be thinking about getting into college, asking a question as dumb as this. LOL. I have looked online and I can't find an answer. How do you send letters of recommendation? If you send a paper application, do you have to send the letters in with it, or can they follow later? How about if you apply online? I read something about emailing scanned copies of the letters to a college, but I do not have access to a scanner. Someone help me? Thanks!

Do you mean letters by your teacher? If so, they are supposed to send them to the college

I am homeschooled, so I’m not exactly certain how this would work for me. Of course my mom can write a letter but she’s a little biased. grin I don’t know if one letter would be enough for most colleges. There’s a lady I’ve known for years from my volunteer work who would be glad to write me a recommendation also, but would colleges take that seriously because she’s not one of my teachers?

You should really contact the colleges then.

I am pretty certain your mom would be writing them! At least one!

Thank you, xnamelessx and radannie. I will contact the colleges. Even if I apply online, should I have my mom mail a physical letter to the college, or is there a way to do it electronically?

you can just mail it

If you use the commonapp, there is a way to do it electronically. I think you have to put in your recommender’s email and she’ll receive a link to the form she’ll use to send your recommendation.

What types of colleges are you applying? Since you’re homeschooled, you need to get specifics from your target colleges. Mostly they want objective and independent rec letter writers. Have you taken any classes in a community college or something?

Regardless, any rec letter can just be sent via USPS mail. Doesn’t have to accompany your other app materials.

Also, your local library probably has a public access scanner for you to use if you need it
