Is Frontier or Territorial a better overall dorm for incoming freshmen?

Frontier and Territorial are both mainly freshmen, in the superblock. Both are also known to be ‘party’ dorms, territorial even more so.
Some specifics about each:

Territorial:
-A lot of CSOM students based on a Carlson LLC in the building
-Generally rowdy/noisy

Frontier:
-CSE LLC in the building, a lot of CSE students
-close to the river flats(basically a park-type area)

Both are pretty similar in structure, so no huge differences there. Both are on the Superblock which is kind of separated from everything. It’s relatively far away from classes, and dinkytown. But, there is also a campus connector (I think) that serves the area.

Really, though, it’s what is best for you. The U has a lot of information about the res halls and something that is better for me may not be necessarily better for you. You should visit https://www.housing.umn.edu/ to look more at their housing info.

How much do you know about the new 17th Avenue dorm? There aren’t many pictures or anything on the website. Is it mostly returning students or what?

We did eat at the 17th Ave. dining hall. The portions are very small. We went during prime time for lunch and they were pretty slow. Lines were long at various stations. However, the food was pretty good and DS does say it has the best food but he tends to eat at the dining halls near the Superblock.

Keep in mind that only pioneer and centennial in the superblock have dinning halls, and the one in pioneer closes on weekends. It’s such a pain to talk in cold to the dinning hall in centennial.

Yup, have to brave the cold for Centennial but my kid chose Minneapolis over Miami so he likes the cold weather. Now whether he can get his friends to brave the cold is another matter perhaps that is why they eat alot at Pioneer :)

It depends on what you are looking for.

Frontier hall is slightly milder and some sections have been renovated.

17th vs. Frontier is a hard decision but I would say 17th…it is less rowdy than Superblock and has a decent location…it is also brand new.

Is it ok that I chose centennial hall as a freshmen?

I’m just afraid that 17th Ave. will just be returning students and I won’t get to know as many people as I would if I lived in a freshman dorm…

TBH that’s what i was most worried about too. I couldn’t decide between that and frontier, but i ended up putting frontier as my #1 because being in an all freshman dorm sounded like a huge perk to me LOVED 17th when I went to look @ it, but I felt much more comfortable being around lots of freshman than i did being around so many upper classmen. I heard from tons of people on campus the superblock is the place to be your freshman year(frontier specifically), so hopefully that’s where I’ll end up :)

Well not really. 17th is a basically freshman only dorm. The only people that stay in there are sophomores who live in an LLC on the 6th floor.

Although it isn’t a huge concentration of students like Superblock where you meet people in other halls, 17th still has 400-500 other Freshmen to meet.
