I just received my acceptance to University of Minnesota TC's college of science and engineering. I'm super excited, but next is to worry about applying for housing.

I'm thinking about applying for a single just because I like the thought of maintaining some privacy. My only concern is the potential difficulty in meeting new people and socializing without roommates. I'm not a terribly outgoing person, so will I have a problem in a single?
Can anyone suggest dorms with singles that will still make meeting other freshman easy?
Otherwise any dorm advice is appreciated!

I would recommend putting a deposit as soon as the housing application opens up. I believe it will open sometime in November (check the website). It was only $25.00 and well worth it as you are assigned housing depending upon the date you submit your deposit.

DS is at Frontier Hall on the engineering floor. He is in a suite. His suite mates are great as well as many of the other kids at Frontier. He has found his circle of friends and will be moving to an apartment next Fall.

+1 MTnest - the application becomes available on November 29th this year. Put in your application as soon as possible after that … even if you haven’t been accepted yet or are not sure you will attend. You don’t have to know what room type you want, or what building you prefer for now … you have until the middle of May to finalize that.

DS submitted his housing deposit on the day it opened and received his first choice. You do not want to be late on this – deposit even if there is the slightest chance of attending and yes, you can deposit even if you haven’t been accepted yet.

First off, congrats to being admitted to the U of M Twin Cities CSE! Dorming is a great opportunity and experience for you to meet people and this is coming from someone who dormed her first year at the University. Believe it or not we’re on the same page, I wanted to have my own privacy but at the same time step out of my comfort zone and be on my own therefore I chose to dorm. I suggest single room because you don’t have to worry about roommates waking you up, bumping heads with them and such. I found it much easier to live in a single room because you get to maintain it your way and it’s more spacious. You don’t have to worry about it being clean or messy because that’s based on your personal choice. In addition I was wondering if your planning to dorm Spring Semester 2014? Because if you do, I have a single room in Sanford Hall if your interested! It’s guaranteed! OR another option of random room random hall which housing assigns to you. Housing is difficult with the waitlist it’ll be a while before your admitted. Let me know if this is something you’d be interested in and feel free to reply/msg back if you want to know more info!

@quong001 So, do you recommend you single freshman year. I am also considering this. Isn’t better to room with a roommate to get to know more people or does it not matter that much?

If I submit the $25 payment in late December-early January will I most likely get one of my first choices? (those being Territorial or Frontier)

So should I go ahead and make the deposit even though I’m not sure this is the school I’m gonna attend? I’ve been accepted but am waiting for some other offers.

Yes, if there is even the smallest possibility you will end up there – put your deposit down for housing. They assign housing based on the date you put your housing deposit down.

We submitted the housing deposit on the first day it opened and Minnesota was not even in the top half of the schools my son applied to. He decided in April to attend and we were so glad we had done the housing deposit :)
