UMN Twin Cities Computer Science

Hello! This morning I found out I was admitted to the UMN College of Science and Engineering. My intended major is computer science, and I was wondering if I could get any insight from students on how their program is for this. How rigorous is the course load? How well does it prepare you for the industry? What opportunities have you had being in this program?

CSE will include the option to go into Computer Engineering as well as CS. Begin her to get an idea of what the deparment is like. There are links under the “Academics” section to provide course and degree requirements for the BS, as well as a proposed plan of study, how to apply to the major, etc.

UMN is generally a top-25 engineering school on the rankings and I think is in the top 30 for CS. Not sure if that helps you.

Both my spouse and I graduated with BS comp sci from CSE many moons ago (formerly known as IT). Have since hired many CSE Comp Sci grads. Very rigorous education. Seem as well prepared as any other grads we would see and favored over many other programs. Great recruiting out of CSE too. We have a nephew who graduated out of CSE a couple years ago who is doing extremely well working in the cities.

Stay on top of your freshman course load is my best recommendation.

Did they guarantee CSE computer science?
Or do you need to apply again in sophomore year?
I applied chemical engineering and I got into COE.

@wowbears UMN admits by college, not by major. Some majors are more competitive than others. All should have technical GPA requirements. Read about it here:

Here is what you both need.

Most likely, Freshman year you will also take a class in your intended major.

Follow-up question. How is the CLA computer science program? I got into that as well as the honors program.

The BA in computer science is going to be pretty rigorous. You take all classes in the CS departments just like the kids in CSE. If you are in the honors program then you’ll be able to take very rigorous courses for your major! The difference between the BA (CLA) and the BS (CSE) is that the BA allows you to take a lot more courses outside your major so you can take a variety of complimentary electives (extra math, for instance) or double major.
