UMN vs Wisconsin

What do you think would be the best match for me?
GPA - 3.94 UW
ACT - 29

Take AP/Honors courses
Student GOV
BPA state (like DECA)
Religion Studies (outside of school)

Want to major in Finance and minor in something in business,
want to work in Actuarial Sciences

which school do you think would be better for me?

For finance? uMich all the way. Ross is the best undergrad business program in the midwest and opens many more doors than UW will for you.

Michigan or Minnesota?

For actuarial science, Wisconsin is better than Minnesota and equivalent to Michigan. However, passing exams is more important than school reputation in that industry.

For business in general, I’d say that Minnesota = Wisconsin but the Twin Cities > Madison. Michigan is better than both but also costs more.

At this point in time, the best solution is to apply to both. No need to narrow things down too much now.

Im sorry I meant Minnesota. Michigan would be great if it didn’t cost 50k!

and do you think it would make sense for me to apply to Michigan (with my stats) etc. I know I will receive no financial aid, and at a school like Michigan, scholarships are probably out reach for me too.

Pick the UofM (Minn)!!!

I would pick Wisconsin over Minnesota. Minnesota is an excellent school but Wisconsin offers a much more vibrant undergraduate experience. Minnesota has more of a reputation for being a commuter school and dorms empty out on weekends. Admission to Michigan is definitely not out of reach for a student with an unweighted 3.94 GPA but I would agree with you that if you will not receive financial aid you must likely will be paying full freight and you would have to really want to go there to justify the increase in cost from Wisconsin.

Are you in-state for any of them? If not, find a private school, IMO. OOS publics are all gonna be expensive like U of Michigan.

with your current score, you will not be good enough to get into UW Madison as freshmen. For UW, in general, you would need to apply for second yr. GPA has to be above 3.5 I think.

In terms of B-School, UW Madison beats U Minn hands down.

My gpa is 3.94 , higher than 3.5.
and yes im in state for both.

Let’s clarify some things:

First, the University of Minnesota is not the “commuter” school some people on this board think it is. Dorms don’t “empty out” on the weekends. Social life is vibrant here whether you want Greek Life, apartment/house parties, or actual clubs downtown (won’t find that option in Madison).

Second, (reference kx1961) Wisconsin doesn’t not beat Carlson hands down. Both are on par with each other. I’m in Carlson, was accepted to Madison and definitely did some digging before I made my choice. At Minnesota I have the opportunity to intern with so many amazing companies ALL YEAR, not just summer where Madison students have to make the trek to other parts of the country. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but as a sophomore I already have intern experience with a Fortune 100 company from during the school year on my resume. Most Wisconsin students can’t say that.

As for the OP, one company that recruits heavily is Traveler’s Insurance out of St. Paul. Perfect if you end up wanting to go into insurance. It’s also nice being admitted to Carlson as a freshman because you get to start taking business and econ classes early and it really helps point you in the right direction.

Thanks a lot, I know that the cities give a BIG advantage for recruiting over Madison.
I want to major in finance, and minor in risk management.

Right now im leaning heavily towards Carlson vs Madison
but I’m not 100% sure, since I’m a junior.

UMinn mostly get jobs in Minn after school while UW places much more nationally so if you want to work in Minny go there. Otherwise UW is better in many ways.
Madison has no clubs–are you for real?

Here’s what an actual UMinn prof recently said:

" I have a sneaking admiration for the University of Wisconsin at Madison because they seem to run over Minnesota academically and in other less important ways like football."

http://chronicle.com/blogs/brainstorm/author/wgleason

one bump ;p

Barrons, comparing clubs of Madison to that of the Twin Cities is not exactly apples to apples neither is say, comparing the clubs of the Twin Cities to Chicago or NYC.

Every time you bring up the business school at Wisconsin you make it sound like if you go to Carlson the chances of placement anywhere other than Minneapolis is unheard of, try again. The alumni network available to all Carlson students online has alumni in every major metro/state you could every want to work in. Honestly, what percent of UW business grads go anywhere other than Chicago, Milwaukee, or the Twin Cities?

I also don’t understand how people can still give you credit when you constantly bash a school without offering any beneficial opinions besides “they are worse at sports” or “we place all around the country, Minnesota can’t do that.” End barrons rant.

OP, visit both schools and especially the Carlson specific tour. You’ll be blown away.

Happy to provide the placement data.

UW placed 16.3% in Chicago, 15% in Madison, 11% in Minny, 16% in other midwest, 19% in other Wisconsin, 9% in the Northeast, 6.3% in the South, and 5% in the West. Other 4% were international and other. So UW placed about 24% outside the midwest.

UMinn did not have a detailed breakout but had 89% in the midwest, 6% in the northeast, and 2% or less anywhere else. So about 11% anywhere outside the midwest and most of their Midwest is in Minnesota while UW is spread thoughout all the major cities.

And you were the one who brought up the vaunted Minny club scene. Like most students want to go party with a bunch of 30 year old working guys and the Target buyers.

I’m just saying there’s options besides the wonderful basement parties Madison provides.

Pick the UMN! Carlson school of management is very strong. Also, because the U of M is urban located in the cities…that means tons of opportunities to find internships. After all, Minnesota is home to many fortune 500 companies like: Best buy, Target, General Mills, Delta/Northwestern airlines and many more (that I can’t think of off the top of my head). Also, The cities MPLS/St.Paul has a lot of culture, food and arts scene so you won’t get bored. About 10 minutes away is The Mall of America too (1st?2nd? biggest mall in america):D

I’d rather party in a basement with people my age than go to some cougar dominated bar to pick-up desperate divorcees.
General Mills and Target both hire a number of people at UW. If you want to work in Minny out of Madison it’s not a problem.

How many CEOs has Minny produced again?

" Large state institutions like the University of Wisconsin—Madison, the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor, and Ohio State University ranked highly as well, as each awarded at least 10 degrees to CEOs on Fortune’s list. Wisconsin stood out among its state school peers, granting 17 degrees to the CEOs, which put the school fourth overall."

Game, set, match.
