How beneficial is it to be a Hispanic Minority (1st generation)? Is it much 'easier' for admittance into Harvard (or any Ivy league for that matter).

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

it gives u an edge, although i'd say harvard is the most applied to ivy both early and regular...i've been looking at the boards of a few schools, and harvard and yale seem to have the most hispanic early applicants as opposed to binding early programs like princeton and columbia....at harvard, it will still give u a bit of an edge over whites and asians, but not as much as you might think, if you wanted to compound that edge, applying ed would have upped your odds even more

aww i should've applied ed then.. grr

All I can say is that I hope the hispanic pool is incredibly small this year (although I doubt it)...

If anyone could estimate, around how many minority hispanics apply regular action to Harvard each year?

...lol, well you cant apply early decision to harvard, i just meant applying to ed schools if you didnt care between harvard and princeton.....but i can tell u princeton accepts approximately 25% of hispanics overall....if that helps at all

lol i meant ea for harvard
sorry typo

wow princeton 25 %?
thats pretty high

does harvard accept that many hispanics like princeton?

thanks

lol, i havent the slightest clue...i can tell u harvard is applied to a lot more by everyone as a whole (just look at the total number of apps for both schools)...and that's partly due to the fact that harvard has achieved somewhat of a status as a brand name for where "smart kids" are supposed to go, so naturally, hard working hispanic parents who are unexperienced in the college search process will encourage their kids to apply to the big name schools....i cant give you an immediate percentage, but i think i could safely assume, the hispanic acceptance rate is higher than the white/asian rate, and maybe slightly lower than the princeton rate

thanks zack

just curious
are you in college? or are you in the 'application' process as well?

lol, well, my name's alex, but im applying ed to princeton this year, if deferred, harvard's on my reg list

goodluck buddy
how are your stats?

what persuaded you to apply ed to princeton?

i did a program at columbia u this summer, and i decided an urban environment offered too many distractions lol if u know what i mean...visited princeton shortly thereafter and loved it

stats ~1480ish sat
12 ap's, two a minuses entire career, ranked in top 1% of class
offered to walk on to one of their sports teams though im not an official recruit...im a urm as well though i've told differently on the prineton board cuz they get upset when they hear about the hook we have

a lot of service
love creative writing, been published here and there
academic team...a few random clubs, started two

good luck to u too

yeh i'm thinking of gettin away from the urban env too.. I visited dartmouth a few weeks ago on the dartmouth bound program and I loved it

nice stats.. umr owns $, are you first gen?

but then again it is HARVARD.. I think I should visit sometime soon..
I applied to MIT ea but I doubt i wanna go there.. however If i get in (by some miracle) I'll probably go visit the two

yeah, i can afford to pay my way...but my mother beign from south america is an important facet of my own identity that i wanted to share...so i hope it still gives me a bit of an edge

lol your rich.. lucky you

howd you do on your sat 2s?

770wr, 780sp, 740us, still waiting on math ii but prolly 700ish

yeah, i have lots of friends who are struggling to figure out how they'll afford college, so i feel bad for kids who have outstanding records who have to put themselves through such anxiety...but succeeding with fewer resources than someone with means is that much more impressive...so u can look at it this way...a urm with money offers cultural diversity but also takes up no financial aid for say, another urm who could contribute cultural diversity and also shed light on what it's like to succeed without resources

yeh
your scores are impressive

i took sat 2s 2 weeks ago i think.. but i havent received the scores yet
right now i have a 1200 on sats, but im retaking it in december.. so hopefully 1350-1400?

yeh iduno
wish me luck hehe

i definitely hope the best for you...remember scores arent everything, and for those with limited resources, they matter even less according to the admissions committee, so just stay positive as you already seem to be

good luck with the retake in december...im sure you'll do great

p.s. does ur sn have anything to do with how ur parents conceived u?...just wondering

somewhat..
I mean the idea was from a band that I listen to,
but I guess it relates to me in a way also

Haha I hope the harvard people dont get mad since we are talking on here

btw, what countries are you or your parents from?
