For most of the popular programs they have a waitlist to fill the vacant spots. UM is so adamant that they never had a waitlist. They always hand out extra few spots and assume 5-6 spots are not going to be taken. I wish they had a waitlist in case, if 10 of them decides to turn UM down. What do I know?

If they want you, then they want you. If they are not sure, then they choose not to invite you. It has always been that way. It works for them.

Gah, satacer, I remember a while back you made an extremely arrogant post. I guess you got what was coming.

um, im pretty sure very few direct programs have waiting lists. The programs are too small for that.

Also, satacer, no offense, I try to be fairly friendly most of the time-but you sound extremely arrogant-like you are entitled to a position at some of these direct programs. Realize that people who get in and people who get rejected are qualified academically and for the most part are smart people. Programs have to make tough decisions and I dont think it should be a surprise to be rejected from anywhere. Almost everyone has “good interviews” in the sense that most people who interview you are very friendly and try to make the situation comfortable. Even “tough” interviewers like Dr. Green at NU aren’t entirely unfriendly. It’s about what you say in the interview to demonstrate that you have what they are looking for that matters-not if you smiled and joked with your interviewer. Dont take these rejections personally, I’m sure you’ll be fine at the end of the day in terms of your career.

7yearman, dude are you the one with 5 papers and patents? If they are all true, you must be a prodigy right? If so, why not pursue your degree in Astrophysics and do some great for man kind. I have never made claims to be a genius. If so, that may not be true. You proclaim to be the smart guy in the board, and you are wishing some evil on me. What a joke! Peace.

All I am making is a valid point that UM can learn something good from other schools. Or some of the good schools can learn the bad habit from Miami and screw the waitlist candidates. Even Harvard has a wait list. UM HPME is old fashioned and rigid. The best one I liked was RPI/AMC rolling admissions with waitlist. Combined programs need to embrace the idea.

well, direct programs are entirely different. As far as I know HPME, Rice baylor, etc dont have waitlists-therefore you are wrong about learning from other schools.

Yes, harvard and every undergrad has a wait list-bc yield is more unpredictable in that case. Direct programs are really really small so there is no need to have a wait list, even if like 10 people go to Miami-they are fine with that.
