I was accepted early action and just today got a letter notifying me that I would be receiving one of the Jean Fairfax Scholarships (10 grand per year). Coming from out of state I know that need-based aid isn't going to cover it and I would definitely need more merit-based or Michigan just can't even be an option (and I really want it to be!) So I'm wondering, does anyone know if students traditionally can get multiple merit scholarship offers through Michigan as the admissions and aid season goes on, or is this probably it?
Thanks

We are also out-of-state and my D just got the same letter. We were really pleased but also curious to know if more is on the way! Have people heard already from other merit scholarships?

What states do you guys live in, and what are your stats? I’m also OOS and hoping for a merit scholarship, so I just want to know.

it’s possible to get multiple merit scholarships

Yes, curious about your stats (or your D’s) if you don’t mind sharing? And what college at UM did they apply to? Have they already accepted the offer of admissions?

Congratulations!

This is off scholarship website:

The Jean Fairfax Scholarship seeks to recognize students with demonstrated scholarly potential and a record of leadership who will continue the tradition of excellence at the University of Michigan. Students considered for the Fairfax Scholarship will have a history of strong academic performance and will have been recognized locally and nationally for leadership and community service efforts. A separate scholarship application is not required; consideration will be given during the admissions process. It is named for Jean Fairfax, a 1941 U-M graduate and civil rights champion who has advanced educational philanthropy at U-M and throughout the country.

Hoping for merit scholarship for my DD as well (we are OOS).

Michigan’s next capital campaign is supposed to focus more on financial scholarship funding than buildings. They certainly need to do something to make it more affordable to top OOS students who simply cannot afford the expense.

Maryland, as another poster suggested, it is possible to receive more than one scholarship.

Depending on your FAFSA/CSS info, it is also possible to receive one or more scholarships and then still receive additional need-based grant money as well, even if you’re out of state…though that’s not ALWAYS the case.

So you really won’t know if it’s possible to attend until you have your full package info in the spring. Sorry, I know that it sounds like another long wait!

Thanks everybody! I guess I will have to wait and see.
I know that UM doesn’t guarantee to meet full need for OOS and it doesn’t have any stats on collegeboard about aid packages so I’m getting anxious (and mostly sad) because Michigan is just too incredible. Only in the wake of finishing all my applications this month did I actually take a moment to really fully realize how significant aid is going to have to be in making my decisions. Hoping for the best.

For those wondering about my stats-
-Accepted into the LSA early action
-SAT: 2350 (cr:800, w:800, m:750)
-GPA: 4.0 unweighted, 4.83 weighted
-Extracurriculars: leadership in a few school organizations and a fair amount of volunteer/internship work during the summers
-Awards: National Merit Semifinalist, local community service awards, local science/arts awards

Maryland, what the heck happened in Math? Just kidding…you seem to have amazing credentials. What do you plan on studying? Is Michigan your first choice? If so I hope it works out for you and that you get to attend. Best of Luck.

I got the scholarship yesterday too! I’m in California.

Maryland13

Those stats look like University of Maryland Banneker Key Scholarship numbers. Full ride: room, board and tuition/fee. If you applied to Maryland and received a BK University of Michigan has a ways to go to match such an offer

My D’s stats are:
SAT: 2300 (cr720, w790, m790)
GPA: 4.3
ECs: dance, camp counselor, very involved with Jewish continuing education group incl leadership roles, yearbook editor, some leadership in school clubs.
We are in Califorbia. So the UCs are the top competition and , even tho pricier than they used to be, still a relative bargain.

Had you all already submitted the FAFSA/etc.?

Bigdoglover-
I haven’t heard back from a lot of schools yet because I only applied early to UVa and Michigan (and was also accepted to UVa), but Michigan is absolutely one of my top choices and I’m planning to double major in sociology or political science and screens arts and culture.
Granipc-
I haven’t submitted the FAFSA yet so I really don’t know what my final package will be but I haven’t heard great things about the OOS need-based aid.

I read on the website that the first round of LSA-specific scholarships comes out the first week in February and that Shipman semifinalist notifications come out around now, anyone hear anything?

Eeek. I am in the same position as you- really hoping to receive another merit scholarship. Unfortunately, my parents have a pretty solid financial standing, so the FAFSA won’t do much for me.

I haven’t heard about Shipman semifinalist anything. I want more merit aid Q_Q

Also, is the Shipman scholarship the highest amount of merit aid one can receive?

I think it’s one of the highest individual merit scholarships there is but I imagine one could get lucky and have multiple scholarships that might add up to more. Website says LSA grants like 200 scholarships to every incoming class that range between $1,000 and $20,000 per year so it probably depends on the college you’re in.

I received the Jean Fairfax scholarship and on that scholarship letter it states that the scholarship cannot be paired with any other scholarship. However, you can still win others and decide which one you want. With that being said, I believe $20,000 is the highest amount one can get: Shipman’s Scholarship.
