The general merit scholarship (was called Scholarship of Honor back when I matriculated) is $20,000 for out of state students. Shipman Finalists get full tuition + board (I think whatever isn’t covered by the scholarship itself is covered by LSA or engineering), so that’s the “best” scholarship.

The scholarship letter didn’t say that all scholarships are off-limits, though. My letter says that the Jean Fairfax cannot be used with the Rogel Award of Excellence, or the following scholarships: Detroit Compact, Kalamazoo Promise, Michigan Experience, Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver, Stamps, Shipman or Wade McCree. Granted, these are the biggest scholarships offered, and you would have to withdraw if you got the Shipman. But hey, at least we’re still in the running for some of the smaller, LSA-specific scholarships?

I’m sure you’ve all seen this before, but just in case you haven’t, here’s a list of all of the scholarships offered through LSA:
[Scholarship Index | LSA Students | University of Michigan](http://www.lsa.umich.edu/students/scholarships/scholarshipindex)

Ooh wow, I thought Shipman Finalists only get 20,000. I say only, but obviously I realize that is a lot of money. I didn’t know they get full rides!

I’m anxiously waiting for some OOS money too.

I talked to admissions today and they said the individual schools are just now beginning to send out merit scholarships. They will be given between 2/1 and 3/1 they said. I am certainly hoping we get something. DS has large merit scholarships so far at every school except UM and it’s his first choice.

Do you have to apply EA to Michigan to be considered for merit scholarships? As a regular decision candidate is it possible I could get something as well?

Hoping & praying for Shipman’s.

volleyball51, I read that those who applied EA have some sort of priority consideration.

@editor thank you!

Osser, were your DS’s other scholarships at comparatively ranked schools? Private schools? Are you in-state or out-of-state?
If you’re in-state and you’re eligible to have some need met, Michigan does meet need, just so you know. But if you’re FAFSA’s expected contribution is high, many in-staters find that other, lesser-ranked schools or generous privates can often be a better deal. (Not saying a better experience…just economically more viable Doubly so for out-of-staters, who rarely have full need met.
Best wishes!

@kmcmom13 We are OOS. Most of the schools he has merit to already are comparable. And most offers came within a month of acceptance. Unfortunately, we will not qualify for much with FAFSA as our income is now high but we had several years of unemployment that drained just about everything. FAFSA doesn’t care about that as we found out with an older child.

@osserpusser… what college was he admitted to? We are also OOS, and also will get nothing from FAFSA, and the OOS costs for UMich are staggering. It is is first choice but I just don’t see it as being feasible without some kind of break, however, I don’t have high hopes for merit money as it seems they give out very few to OOS students. :(

^This then is a case where you might want to secretly hypnotize said children to love their generous alternates. We love UMich here, but we’ve seen a few OOS students have to leave due to financial circumstances; and we’ve seen others regret the high debt load endured just for undergrad. So it all really depends on a family’s resources, availability of resources, and attitude towards how those resources are used.

I was exceptionally fortunate that we are in-state and that my son’s program was top tier and his first choice (because all his other schools were private and costlier than UM-OOS even). UMich is still a pretty good deal compared to full-pay privates (you’ll save about 10K a year, and residence is generally cheaper than some schools, eg. NYU.)

For a while though, way back when, my son was very fond of NYU-Tisch (Clive Davis Recording Arts program). So I decided he could “treat” me to a visit weekend in NYC and pay for all costs. That led us to staying in a hostel that convinced him he did not want to be a starving student in NYC, at least during undergrad years ;)

On the flight home, we discussed finances. As part of that program, we discussed concretely what $240,000 gets you in the world (and in our area.) Drove by houses, looked at amortized payback schedules. Looked at monthly car payments. Etc. It was a great teaching opportunity. Most 18-yr-old kids can’t quite wrap their heads around what $240 k looks like. It’s a protracted conversation worth having – and worth making explicitly concrete.

At the same time, you never know – the merit aid goddess may smile on you! Just treat it as if you’ve purchased a lottery ticket I will send you to mojo!

Has anyone heard about any other scholarships from Michigan? I have a 35 ACT, 1550 (CR+M) SAT, and 4.0 UW GPA with great EC’s, and although Michigan is my top choice, I would need good scholarship money in order to attend. I’m understandably anxious.

@KMCmom13… EXACTLY. We have had “the talk” in pretty concrete terms. We have not visited UMich yet (told him we would only go if he got in) so we are headed up in March for an Admitted Students Day. If no money has magically appeared by then, I’m praying for a blizzard, lots of gray mush and nothing fun at all going on around campus. My Texas bred boy THINKS he doesn’t mind the cold… so I’m hoping for some crazy cold temps. HA!

VBlock, I think the Jean Fairfax scholarships went out. They are $10,000 a year in aid for 4 years.

I have not received any notification about the Shipman Scholarship, but that may already be out.

We’re in the same position. UM is my son’s first choice (OOS), but the cost is so high. I don’t expect anything from the FAFSA. My son received very generous scholarships at the other schools he applied to and I feel bad about this coming down to money if that’s where he really wants to be. Especially when he’s worked so hard in high school. When we visited UM last year, my son just loved it there but I just can’t see the value of spending all of that extra money when he can get a great education and opportunities at other colleges for a fraction of the cost.

I’m also waiting on my Honors application and Ross pre-admit. Michigan really likes to preserve the suspense, huh? But would you say I’m a candidate for scholarship?

my S got admitted to LSA honors today. He submitted his honors essay a month back. No news of merit scholarship yet.

my son heard back about 3 weeks after submission of honors app/essay. I can’t imagine he’s going to get a merit scholarship, may push us in another direction once we see his RDs but the rc/honors programs are tempting (but are they worth 25k/year?).
