****UMTC Fall 2016 Applications/Admissions Thread****

No I think they’re talking about the college search feature

@JBStillFlying2 Hello! I actually ended ip finding out that I got in! Thank you for your help!

@HelloNutella Congrats!

Accepted to CBS!
SAT: 1410
GPA: 3.96 UW
ECs: Choir, grad committee, lots of community service
2 DE classes (chemistry and calculus)

I have been following this thread for the last couple weeks. Didn’t tell my daughter as she has been stressing the last couple of weeks. The message changed late yesterday…and based on this thread, we knew the decision was close. Just found out about 10:30 this morning - she was accepted!! This thread was helpful - thanks to all who have commented. I now have a Gopher and a Badger, our son is a 2016 graduate of UW-Madison – let the Big 10 rivalry fights begin. She is the first student from our high school to attend the U. Being 6 hours away won’t be a problem for her…and mom/dad are lucky – our son and his fiance landed in Minneapolis. The comforts of a family member so close will help ease my worries. So exciting when our children achieve their goals.

Awesome story @happymom2017. Congrats to your D. What is she hoping to major in?

S was accepted into CLA today. Sentence was cut off in the tracker last night and the status changed this morning. He wanted CSE so will likely not be attending since he’s been admitted to several other schools for engineering with big merit. The planned OOS tuition hike at UMN is also a concern for us.

As I was typing this, son just got a Congratulations email from Minnesota letting him know he was admitted and to check the tracker. Kind of surprised as I didn’t think they were notifying so quickly by email.

ACT: 33 composite (single sitting)
GPA: 3.68 UW (University laboratory school, doesn’t weight or rank)
State: Illinois
Gender: Male
Intended Major: Chemical Engineering
Awards: National Merit Commended, Illinois State Scholar, All-District Band
ECs: lots of band-related (marching, pep, pit orchestra, madrigal brass, jazz, church wind ensemble, trumpet section leader)

Best of luck to those still waiting on a decision!

So cool how that sentence cut-off means a decision is coming out. That wasn’t the case last year. It seems each year the particular signal changes. @Itsabeautifulday congrats to your son!

I am curious about what to expect re: potential honors program invitation. S applied in late September, was admitted to CSE in late October (I think), and received significant merit scholarship $ a couple weeks later (national and presidential, I think are the names of the scholarships). He has not heard anything (or seen any updates on his portal) regarding the honors program. I know it’s harder to get into honors from CSE than other colleges, but I think he’s competitive: 4.0 UW GPA, 800’s on SATII Math2 and Chem, 770 SAT US History, 35 ACT, 6 AP’s so far (one 4 and five 5’s), plus rigorous senior year schedule (1 AP and 4 DE classes). Also, he’s NMSF. (I think these stats are pretty similar to @Mollysan 's S, who is listed as being admitted to honors above?) We are OOS - not sure if that is a factor. Does anyone have information/insight about likely timeline and outcome for the honors program? Thanks!

I was just accepted into CLA today at 1pm PST. I got the sentence cut off thing at 10am PST yesterday. It’s so weird that they give these strange signals that are open to interpretation, why not just say “your decision is coming soon”?

Anyway here are my stats:
OOS
UW: 3.59
ACT: 31
SAT: 1420
ECs: only really significant ones were my 2 software engineering internships, besides that, the standard stuff NHS, volunteering etc…
Hooks: My grandfather taught at the university for a short time and I put that down on the application so I guess that might be a hook.

I’m pretty happy with this decision. I wanted to get into CSE but at least CLA has a computer science program and the CS+x thing seems like it could be interesting.

Has anyone else not heard back from here yet? I swear everyone in my school found out this week besides mr and my application was sent in July 5th!

Accepted into CEHD!
3.62 GPA
top 30% of class
24 act, taken 4 times with 27 in math, 27 in reading, 26 in English and 23 in science (all on different tests obviously, but shows I am college ready)
17 transfer credits from my local university
Minnesota resident
tons of EC including student council, Youth advisory commission (youth city council subcommittee) President of choir for a year, link leader, sports manager, and NHS member, tons of volunteer work including working with PTSD patients and the humane society.
Selective internship at local bank
Legacy

I still haven’t heard, but I’m probably going to get denied since I applied to the two most competitive schools with a lower than average GPA

@huet99 I think if you don’t qualify for those schools, they might place you in a school that you better fit into. They did that for me and many others I’ve seen.

@Maoxingren, it is kinda weird about the sentence cut-off this year. Not sure they are trying to be coy or subtle - guessing it’s a system quirk. What might be happening is the when your application is forwarded for final review and decision the tracker is programmed to drop the date deadline. Awkward, of course, because no other info. is given. In years past it used to change to "Your application is being very carefully reviewed . . . " and it would be helpful to have the same message again. Not sure why they dropped it.

Congrats on the admission to CLA - yeah, you are able to combine the CS major with something else in that college just like you would in any liberal arts college program (some will even triple major or double major and minor). If you still want the technical exposure that CSE would have given you, you might consider loading up on extra math and science.

@JBStillFlying If I may ask, where does the sentence get cut off?

@aimlesswriter In your tracker

Applied October 2, haven’t heard back. Sentence hasn’t been cut off. Thought I had a pretty decent chance for Carleson, but at this point, I was accepted into my top school so I don’t really care. It would just be nice to know, though

Things are going to be really slow right now and should pick up in Jan. We know very qualified applicants last year who didn’t hear till then and they were accepted. UW-Madison hasn’t even released the bulk of it’s decisions, in-state or out. As frustrating as the wait can be, it will end soon.

My son applied for CSE (software engineer) and 2nd preference CLA (computer science) - he applied on Oct 19th and we have not heard anything yet (no changes to status in tracker)

His stats are

ACT - 30 (M-34/E-29/R-32/S-30)
GPA - 3.2 (uw)
AP - 3 already taken / 2 more this year
Extra curricular - Not much - just Volunteering at summer school +200 hrs, Quiz bowl

CSE seems to be difficult … have hopes for CLA but as haven’t heard yet just wondering the low GPA is going to impact his chances - what do you think his chances of getting into CLA (comp science) - appreciate any feedback.
