*my bad, applied to CSOM
Everyone confuses CBS for Carlson. (Carlson School of Business - makes sense, right?). It’s Carlson School of Management and College of Biological Sciences. UMN is one of the few uni’s that has a separate college of biology. However, it’s possible to major in the hard sciences (physics, chem, bio) and still attend CLA. That’s why CLA is a popular second choice.
My D applied 10/22 to CBS and CFANS. No news yet for her. Her stats probably make it a reach for CBS, but I would think she would be ok for CFANS.
Class rank: 5/154(3.99 UW gpa)
ACT: 27
My daughter applied on Aug 5, and to date her application tracker just shows everything was received by the priority deadline and all decisions will be made by January 31st. Has anyone else applied that long ago and still not heard anything?
Her stats:
ACT 31
UW GPA - 3.5
Athlete all 4 yrs, Varsity Jr/Sr yr.,Captain Sr year
AP Classes (AP Calculus BC, AP Physics, AP Macro, AP US Government & Politics, AP Psych)
Volunteer organization - Key Club
Academic Club - Math Team, Health Occupation Students of America
Has had a job Jr & Sr year
@Momlettinggo17 I am have similar stats and applied around the same time as your daughter and I have not heard anything yet.
Similar stats and situation as well for my son here too…applied late July! I assured him that I’m sure he’d probably find out by November and still nothing. He applied to CSOM as a reach and 2nd the Business and Marketing Education program in CEHD. With applying the very first day it opened, he didn’t think he’d have to shrug when everyone at Christmas asked where he was going lol!
Neither one of us was really too worried but now as January stretches on we are finding ourselves refreshing several times a day and feeling the stress!
I got that same email filled it out and nothing…hoping for Merit scholarships to come out soon! B-)
Hey all of you with no answers yet, don’t worry. If you are really concerned have your kids go to their counselors at their HS and call from the office to UMN, make sure they have everything. Good Luck!
@Chiefster72 My son applied regular decision to the same two schools/programs as your son. What are your thoughts on the Business/Marketing Education program. I tried to convince my son to apply in CFANS for applied econ instead as his second choice, but he went ahead with this one. We have no decision from the school yet, of course. Just hoping to hear your thoughts on that program. Thanks!
@uwalummom should he change his mind it should not be hard to switch from CEHD to CFANS.
Thank you @JBStillFlying - that’s good to know!
@uwalummom We toured the Business and Marketing Education program on one of their tour days last summer and I actually think it’s a better fit for my son than Carlson. They talk about how it’s more of a people oriented major and about business relationships and my son is a great communicator and very much a people person. I am worried about him being bored with a lot of the business stuff in Carlson. It may be too dry for him. I just really haven’t heard much about the business CEHD program in general though which had me kind of worried, but I keep remembering how impressed I was during that tour. We didn’t even tour Carlson, he knew that it was his number one choice. I heard most people apply to CFANS for applied econ as number two though. But I definitely know that CEHD is one of the easier colleges to get into, easier than CLA.
Econ in CLA is ranked fairly high in terms of the grad program (trickles down to some extent to the undergrad level but you still get a LOT of TA’s teaching :(). It’s known to be rigorous. However, there are three tracks at the undergrad level so you can choose your amount of rigor: BA, BA (quantitative emphasis) and BS (which is the most quantitative and math-y). Not sure how it breaks out in terms of popularity. Most probably do the BA just because Econ. is typically a BA/liberal arts major, and this way you have time and credits available to double major in other fields. The BS does exempt you from the CLA foreign language requirement.
CFANS-Econ has some prominent faculty but they don’t have the same reputation. The Applied Economics major used to be called Ag. Econ so oriented toward the agriculture sector. Some universities have an excellent Ag. Econ program (can’t say whether UMN does or doesn’t as I haven’t looked into it; however, as a Big 10 university dedicated to research in the Ag. sector, you’d think it would).
Carlson allows the Econ. prerequisites to be satisfied with with the CLA program or the CFANS program.
I called admissions to find out why I have not received a decision yet, and they said that I will find out by the end of this month. Is it just me, or does it not seem fair that people who applied in November have already found out while someone who applied in August is still waiting
@Chiefster72 Thank you for your input! I’m glad to hear you liked the program when you toured. I don’t think my son will be admitted to CSOM, but we are hopeful for CEHD.
@JBStillFlying Thank you for explaining some of the other options. It’s very helpful
I got the letter for Honors at CBS today. MN resident.
@LaikaDoodles can I ask what your stats are? I’m waiting for my D to hopefully get into Honors but we haven’t heard anything yet. And did your tracker change at all?
Applied October 20th, hear back mid-November. Got accepted into CSOM and Honors Program!
ACT - 34
GPA - 3.9 UW
Rank - 2/89
AP - 5 (Chem, Calc, HIstory, Spanish, Lit)
EC - 3 sports, plus language and business clubs
From WIsconsin
Also, when can we expect to hear back about financial aid?
Honors notification will change on the Tracker first. That’s the fastest way to know whether you’ve been accepted to Honors.
