****UMTC Fall 2016 Applications/Admissions Thread****

Ok thanks @jh1868! I’m surprised they didn’t switch you to CLA during the admissions process but it could be that they thought you weren’t interested. If UMN is still high on your list then you might send in current grades and ask them if they would consider you for CLA. Your SAT is awesome and just might help you get in. Once at UMN, you can major in Econ. (which has an excellent reputation) and apply to Carlson as a transfer. Or you can stick with Econ. and minor in management.

@huett99 - there was someone way upthread who was rejected from, I think, CEHD with an uw GPA right below that number and it seemed pretty surprising at the time but maybe they are really holding to a higher GPA now. So sorry you weren’t accepted after that long wait! I remember they switched you to CLA so they must have thought there could have been a decent fit there. Therefore, if your first semester senior grades are higher you might see if sending those in with an expression of continued interest can help your case.

Good luck to both of you!

@JBStillFlying How many people do they generally admit from the wait list?

@jh1868 not sure and it probably differs from year to year. They do admit the strongest applicants which is good news for you. The unfortunate news is that they don’t provide a status till mid-April which might make it difficult for decision timing. They may allow their admitted from the waitlist to have some extra time just to work through the financial aid, etc. (call to get clarification if they didn’t provide any info. on that yet).

If you request a change in college and send them strong first semester grades, you can only improve your chances of being accepted.

S also waitlisted @ cse. Too bad as he just got his 1st sem. grades for ap calc2, ap physics2, ap bio, ap eng lit, ap psych, mband and a 4.4 which moved his rank up several spots. He has 32act, 3.9W & 11ap’s, and good EC’s.

He’s pretty disappointed and this will probably push him to be a badger, which is nice!

@Busdrvr320 - congrats to him on being accepted to UW-Madison! If he’s still interested in UMN then he should definitely send in those first semester grades. The strong upward trend in what has to be his toughest course load to date obviously speaks to his abilities and will boost ultimate admission chances. Good luck to him!

Thanks @JBStillFlying, if he wants to express interest and update UMN how is that best accomplished at this point if you know? Also I am intrigued by your handle. Are you by chance in the airline industry? At JB? PM if you prefer.

@Busdrvr320 here is a link to the admissions page about the waitlist:

https://admissions.tc.umn.edu/apply/waitlist_info.html#why

They do tend to pull the strongest candidates off first which is why I suggested sending in the updated transcript. Your son should be able to contact his admissions counselor, express continued interest, and clarify how to send the updated grades so that they are received and considered.

I could be wrong here, but students who are waitlisted at this point might actually be stronger candidates than those waitlisted in March. Right now they are holding space open to consider the additional applications from the regular pool. If you were just over the line in terms of an actual admission, you could well be offered admission later on depending on how many they select from that regular pool. My hunch tells me that it’s more like a deferral: they want to look at that next pool now and they’ll get back to you at a later date. Keep in mind, I could be completely off base on this hunch!

I am NOT in the airline industry LOL. I DO feel like a bus driver given the amount of kid-related driving I do! I’m sure other parents here feel the same

Thanks for the info @JBStillFlying. That all makes sense and S has at least 2 pals who were accepted at cse and will be going elsewhere so there is bound to be a fair amount of “churn” that allows deferrals a shot later on. I will try to counsel him to make the effort and keep the umn option open for now. We’ll see how be responds to that. I think he put down a second choice on his app, but I am not sure if it was a different major from cse or if it was a major from a different school altogether. Do kids get offered their second choices if they meet the req’s right away? Or do they waitlist first choice at this early date. Just something I wonder about.

Congrats to you and your D ?, I think, on your successes as well. Exciting times!

Probably good you are not in the airline biz, it is an exciting career mostly, but it does have its drawbacks, like most anything. Enjoy the rest of your weekend

@Busdrvr320 I think they will admit to your second choice college if they think there is a good fit. That’s why it’s always smart to make that second choice your backup. Many of the science majors in CSE or CBS have a compliment in CLA, for instance. They have you list the major in order to make sure they are considering you for the college you wish to attend. They also say (and they have definitely done this in the past) that you may get accepted to something that you didn’t specify, if they think it’s a better fit. That would typically be CLA. However, if CLA is also getting harder to get into, then it may be less of a default backup than it used to be. That may explain the surprising stats on some of the waitlists this year.

What are the odds of getting unaccepted from the U? I know every college says your grades need to be constant through your senior year, but what qualifies as consistent. I am taking much harder classes than I had in previous years (5 AP classes), and I got Bs in 4 of them and a B+ in one. Im working harder to get them higher this tri, but I just want to know, what are the odds of me getting rejected if my grades don’t turn out great?

If you are getting B’s you are going to be fine. Rejections are a real risk if you have really tanked something (like a D or lower) or have committed a serious crime. Do well on your AP tests and you will always have those to show them!

Does UM send out all of your scholarships at the same time, or will you get some right away and some later?

It depends. The university awards probably come out at the same time (for each recipient) because those are significant $'s and tend to be issued from Admissions. College-specific awards, on the other hand, might have completely different timing. And then, when it comes to need-based awards from the FA office, those don’t come out till March.

Ok. Thanks @JBStillFlying. I got a scholarship from Carlson, but I didn’t get anything else, so I was hoping more would come out, because the scholarship I recieved barely dents the cost

@bwalts61 I think the University Wide Scholarships are sent randomly; not all at once. I know a few people that got them last November/December but my daughters National Scholarship didn’t come to us until a couple weeks ago. Hopefully there is still a chance you could get more.

anyone know what happens when a recipient of a university wide scholarship declines the offer? is an additional recipient considered? If so that could take longer.

@Chiefster72 Regarding posts #349 and 350…did you contact the school to see if your son who was accepted at CEHD and wait listed at Carlson? My son was accepted to his second choice CEHD, assuming first choice CSOM is a denial, but wanted to check with you.

Hi @uwalummom yes I did talk to a counselor and she said that he was still considered on the waitlist for his 1st choice (Carlson), and that accepting admittance to 2nd choice (CEHD) does not take them off of it. Not sure how true that is. I would think that people who had “Waitlisted” (to first choice) as their tracker notification rather than “Accepted” (into 2nd choice) are true waitlisted people but the more I see stats for those that were accepted to Carlson or denied Carlson, the more I think we’ll just move on with CEHD. But she definitely did not say denied from Carlson.

@Chiefster72 Thank you for sharing your experience. That’s very interesting. I agree, it’s impossible to know how true it is. Congrats again to your son on his acceptance

So are you saying that if you are accepted into your second choice it may not mean you are turned down for your first choice?
