D17 invited to honors as well! But didn’t receive the letter yet.
I am not expecting a decision any time soon, but when you log in to the application tracker, where does the admission decision appear?
@soyunchico: the box that says “Status of your application as of (current date)”. If you’ve sent everything in then right now it probably says something like “all of your application materials have been submitted - thank you!” (or something like that). If you just recently submitted, give it a few days to process. Anyway, that message may change as they get closer to reviewing your application or actually send it to the committee for review. And eventually it will show a decision of some sort.
Good luck to you!
I got into CLA yesterday.

@JBStillFlying I was wondering how long to take for D17 to receive the invitation to honors after D17 was accepted by the Carlson School of Management. My son was accepted by CSE 4 days ago, and is waiting for the invitation to honors and scholarship. By the way, has D17 received the scholarship package? I heard that all NMSF in the last several years received a good package of scholarships that could cover 4 years of instate tuition.
@yxmn D17 was accepted in early Oct. and received the invitation to honors a couple weeks later. She hasn’t received any specific scholarship offers yet but as an NMSF she has been notified about the opportunities for finalists and invited to make a personalized visit to campus. I think you are correct that the merit aid could cover almost all of in-state tuition: Gold ($10,000) + National Merit ($1,500 or $2,500 can’t remember exactly) will do most of the trick. If she attends Carlson I think there is a surcharge on the tuition of a couple grand so her tuition would be higher than for CSE.
@JBStillFlying Thank you for your info.
For those accepted, how long did it take for your decision?
Two weeks after the tracker showed all the required materials have been received.
Sent mine first week of August and nothing yet.
A few thoughts before we get too far into the admissions cycle:
They are working through the obvious admits first and will continue to give those priority throughout the admissions cycle. It doesn’t mean that someone’s application is a “no go” it simply means it’s not up for review at the present time. All decisions will be released by January 31st according to the website - that’s an entire month earlier than prior years so a big improvement right there. Hopefully they can start to release a whole bunch more when the Priority deadline on Tuesday passes because the flow of applications coming in will slow down considerably after that time. Right now they are probably still pretty busy accepting and processing applications.
UMN is a pretty straightforward admissions process and they make the criteria well known. In the absence of rec letters or required essays they are going to focus primarily on stats and course rigor. Therefore, you can pretty much figure out your chances from their admissions profile (link pasted below). If your stats look like this is a reach school, do not be expecting a decision till closer to - or even at - the end of the admissions cycle as waitlists and rejections have historically been sent at that time. Even if they have accepted you with those stats, you will likely not be notified till around that time. The reason for this delay is that, unlike U of Ia or ISU, UMN does not have published minimum criteria that you are required to meet (and if you do so you are in); rather, each application is looked at in the context of that year’s application pool for that college. They also consider a whole bunch of secondary factors that can sway a decision one way or the other when the stats are on the edge. So short story: those applications are going to take a bit of time to sort through and arrive at a decision.
Delays might also be due to changing levels of competitiveness in certain of the admitting colleges. Or because you are strong in one area and weak in another (say, a 35 ACT / 3.5 uw GPA for CSE). Or because they are trying to decide whether to admit you to your second choice or not - btw, in this case, no news is good news! [-O<
Or your admissions rep hasn’t been asked to forward his/her batch to the committee.
In other words - there are a whole bunch of reasons for a delay and each reason is as unique as the application and the hopeful individual behind it. At the end of the road, an admission is an admission regardless of when it arrives. I’ve seen admissions early on with some “pretty interesting” statistics . . . and I’ve seen 3.8+ NHS members with a 30 ACT get admitted seemingly at the last minute and almost as an afterthought. Each of them is totally explainable once you know the whole story but to most of us out here on the sidelines it can look like there’s no rhyme or reason.
If your decision is delayed, use the opportunity to send in more affirming information - such as first semester senior grades, a rec. letter, a personal statement, etc. Sometimes that results in a quick turnaround. Don’t wait till you are waitlisted to improve your chances.
Finally, if you truly believe your decision was made in error and especially you have some evidence to support that reasoning, there is the appeals process. Posters in the past have used that successfully. You may wish to get your GC involved at that point as he/she will be able to provide perspective regarding the general stats of kids from your school who are admitted and can also advise as to the the best way to present your case.
@littlemonsterfl It took me two weeks. I’m also a National Merit semifinalist with a 35 ACT.
The last part of the application status statement, the all decisions will be released by January 31st part, was removed from my tracker today. Does this mean I should be expecting a decision soon?
BTW I am an in-state student and my stats are above the range for my first choice school CBS
@nishchra that’s what happened to a couple of us. Not sure why that’s “the signal” this year! (every year has some signal or other . . . ). If your stats are on the high end for CBS you’re likely admitted. Good luck - keep us posted!
Accepted into CBS today! My tracker changed three days after the tracker deleted the “released by January 31st” part
Accepted to CBS today!

Complete application the first week of October
hi i’m a junior who would like to go to the U at the CSE
my gpa is 3.68UW
ive taken 5 ap’s with 3 more in senior year
in many clubs NHS, KeyClub, BPA ETC
my ACT would be 30 at the lowest 33 to 34 at the highest
what are my chances of admission in CSE and into the honors program
@mazzink - all else equal the GPA is a bit low so the higher you can get that ACT (particularly for the Math and Science scores) the better. Work this year to finish the year strong so that your grades are as high as they can be before you apply in the summer/next fall.
Honors for CSE is VERY selective for freshman admit - here are the current stats:

Good luck to you this year!
Anxious for my S17 who applied with the Golden Gopher app to the CSE. We are from IL and he has a 3.68 UW GPA, ACT of 33, and is a National Merit Commended scholar. His high school does not rank. He has lots of ECs, mostly related to band. We are visiting Saturday and he is excited. Application tracker showed all materials received on 10/18 but no change since. Waiting is hard!
The gpa is a bit low which might delay a decision but his ACT is great! Most likely will be accepted. Good luck to him!
Edit to add: about a third of the UMN marching band is from CSE so he applied to the right program
