@JBStillFlying My bad, I meant when will the decision be made?
@jh1868 what are your stats, etc?
Out of state, California, female
GPA: 3.33 UW and 4.2W
Class Rank: Not ranked
SAT: 2220 (700 Reading, 720 Math, 800
8 honors + 9 AP Classes: AP World History, AP US History, AP Language, AP Environmental Science, AP Literature, AP Calculus AB, AP US Government, AP Computer Science
Extracurriculars: Freshman Basketball, JV Cross Country (1 Year), Varsity Track & Field (4 years), NHS (2 years) -Treasurer for this year, Japan Club (3 years) - Publicist/President/VP, Tech theater (3 years, was Assistant Stage Manager for 1), Robotics (2 years), lots of Community Service, ASB (2 years)
@jh1868 your uw GPA is low for Carlson but the SAT is great! Have you taken at least one year each of bio, chem, and physics? (required for Carlson). Not sure what’s included in the AP Environmental Science curriculum. The rest of your coursework looks fine, as do your EC’s.
You’d be admitted to CLA no problem, especially with that SAT. Carlson’s a lot more competitive - this fall’s admit rate was 28%. It’s possible that you will be admitted to Carlson but not hear right away so you should prepare for that possibility and not lose hope. UMN works through the admissions pool starting with the strongest applications and all decisions are supposed to be sent by Jan. 31. If you don’t hear from them that is good news since you obviously would get into your backup (assuming it’s CLA or similar).
Crossing my fingers for you! Good luck!
Are they sending out decisions to people with the highest test scores right now? I’ve been reading a lot of UM posts on here and it seems like everyone has a 32+ on the ACT and a 1400+ on rSAT. Getting anxious seeing all of the acceptances… :-S
@meganewarren they are a small number of obvious admits. In previous years, the majority of admissions happened much closer to the decision deadline. Very possible that happens this year as well.
@JBStillFlying thanks for the quick response! That makes sense. I’m definitely not an obvious admit, I fall right in the middle of the ranges of CFANS, my first choice. Hopefully I’ll hear in a month or so!
Accepted to CLA on November 20!
28 ACT
3.635 uw/3.719 w
Class rank 22 out of 155
ECs include President/editor of Yearbook, Drama Club, Debate, Choir, Youth Leadership Team, Knowledge Bowl, Student Council
Over 200 hours of Community service
Female, OOS first generation
@meganewarren if you fall right in the middle then you are most likely going to be admitted (provided you are following a college prep high school curriculum). Have there been any CFANS admits yet? Sometimes it seems that they do batches of one college before doing another. Sometimes no definite pattern is apparent.
Good luck to you!
@JBStillFlying from what I’ve seen only a few, not nearly as many compared to science and engineering. I took about half college prep and half honors. Thanks for the info!!
Does anyone know if you are say a gamble admit on your first choice but in the upper middle portion of your second choice, when you are likely to hear back? Also are your chances the same it being your second choice?
Thanks so much!!
@JBStillFlying Yes, I’ve taken all the science classes needed. I actually put Carlson as my second choice too so it’s Carlson or bust, do you know how many people they’ve accepted there, about? I know I saw a few acceptances on posts here but not a lot.
@jh1868 not sure how many have been accepted so far. The acceptance rate for income fall 2016 was 28%, according to the Carlson people when we visited in the summer.
@gopherpride if your first choice is a reach but you are a solid (or easy) match for your second choice - it’s possible you won’t hear back for awhile! It looks like they tend to hold back till it’s clear you won’t make it. You hear back as soon as they know where you are going. Therefore, no news for the time being can be good news because it means they don’t know yet. Hope that makes sense. (Ps that is NOT based on insider info. but from seeing what has happened in previous years. Also, keep in mind that it’s still early in the admission cycle).
