Does University of Mary Washington have rolling admission?

Not that I know of. I believe applications are due in by the 1st of February.

we just had a senior at my S's HS get admitted. have to admit it isn't well known in the midwest. went to the website and it is a truly beautiful school.

you can just feel this one is going to be a very hot school.

It's a great school!

We live about 20 minutes away from UMW and have been there several times.

Quality education, small size (around 4,000 students), no TA's teaching classes.

It looks and feels like a private school at in-state cost!

Mary Washington has both an Honors and a regular admissions program.

How do you apply to an honor program? Btw, I used the common application, so I don't think there's a checkbox saying either an honor or a regular admission program?

Mary Washington does indeed look like a private large LAC for in state dollars. Students are bright. Many are from Northern Virginia but also the corridor just north of there..New York and Middle Atlantic States. Fredericksburg is both historic and quaint and fun to stroll. Traffic five miles out is horrendous for adult beltway commuters but you can walk to catch the train to DC from the campus for cheap. Another plus is quality of cultural events due to proximity to our nation's capital and access to internships. They are still not quite fifty fifty Male Female. That means male applicants might feel a small advantage.

Hairypotter,

If you got you APP in by Jan 15, you'll automatically be considered for Honors Admission.

My D has been admitted to UMW. We were on campus yesterday. It really is beautiful. I've seen them on the "least happy students" list on Princeton Review. However, we know several students and they love it.

UMW is my alma mater (class of '72!) and I fully agree that it's a gorgeous campus. I'm also puzzled about that "least happy students" review. Although it has been eons since I graduated, I can't imagine that it has declined so much that people are truly unhappy there. It sure felt like a LAC when I was there, even though at that time we were considered to be the female branch of all-male UVA. We split from the University and went coed in 1970. Unfortunately, males are still a minority.

My son is considering it as a safety and we are planning to visit in the spring. I intend to ask as many students as I can whether they agree with that assessment or if they know why it was received. I have heard that their registration process is less than desirable and that the food isn't so hot. Also, it's probably somewhat of a suitcase school (it was when I attended, too) because of all the NOVA and Richmond area students. But there seems to be plenty to do on campus for those who stick around.

I with they offered more merit aid than they do. The website doesn't have much info about it. Nvdad, did you learn anything about merit aid when you were there? What about the honors admission -- is that just an early notification thing or an actual honors program? Post a visit report on the UMW board if you have the time. I'd love to read it!

Patsmom,

The Honors Admission is an early notification rather than a formal program of study.

I think their aid is limited but they're so inexpensive as compared to private LACs that I don't see that as an issue. The only LACs in our region that we could find that were clearly better had "soak the rich" financial aid policies (i.e., no merit aid, half the students paying very little, and the rest making up the difference).

We used as many search programs as we could find, and Mary Washington came out in some very good company academically. If it were just a little further from UVA it would be impossible to get in.

Does anyone know when they notify people if they are a finalists/receiving merit scholarships? How about interviews for merit based $? Does anyone know what the typical student who receives these is like in terms of academics/scores/involvement? any other comments on umw? any info on washington scholars full ride?

I actually live in Fredericksburg and have been through the campus of Mary Wash. quite often. I can't really speak for the classes but I can give some background of the city.

Traffic is horrible. Most everybody that lives here commutes and so around 5 o'clock on weekdays, it will take you about 30 minutes to go 5 miles (off campus). The campus is actually located downtown so you shouldn't encounter too much traffic there. Most of the shops downtown are antique type shops and a lot of 'mom and pop' restaurants. There are some historical monuments and a little further out in the county is a civil war battlefield.

Also, about 5 miles off campus is Central Park and the Spotsylvania Mall. Central Park contains any restaurant you can dream up. Bonefish, Outback, Olive Garden, Fuddruckers, Cheeseburger in Paradise, McDonalds, Chipotle, and MUCH more. There's also a Starbucks and Caribou Coffee. Um, store-wise, they have Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Circuit City to name a few. There's also a movie theater and ice rink. The mall is kind of small but they are expanding. I think Fredericksburg has plenty of restaurants, but getting there can be a pain. But really, if you can dream it, its here.

The community is sort of "red-necky" but I believe the student body of Mary Wash is pretty liberal. From what I hear, the dormitories are not the finest but I have not actually seen them. As for professors, a couple of my high school AP teachers also teach at UMW. They're pretty great teachers but typical of local area colleges.

Thanks for on the info!! I appreciate it! Does anyone have any opinions about students leaving the campus on the weekends/how empty it gets? Also, regarding the 'unnhappiest' students ranking..is this anythinig to be concerned about? Also...I know I asked this before..but does anyone know when merit based scholarships are awarded? Oh and yes...someone may have already answered this but..UMW is rolling. If you applied by a certain date (already passed for this year) then you could be notified for early acceptance. This is called 'honors admission' but it does not have a separate honors program...it is basically early notification and enables you to be in the running for some scholarships and also allows you to attend certain days with other admitted students
