Unable to balance work and college?

I’m currently taking online community college courses this summer. I’m also working at Target. I work 4 days a week stocking shelves. It’s not a difficult job, it’s just very tiring. I’m getting really behind in my online classes. I come from a poor working class family and I need to pay for college all on my own. I’m saving up for college for when I transfer. Im not failing, I’m just not doing well right now.i can’t transfer if I have bad grades, but I also can’t transfer if I don’t have the money. Any advice?

An obvious solution is to take fewer classes – yes, it will delay your transfer, but that seems preferable than low grades. Another option is to find a better paying job and working fewer hours.

Do you qualify for work study? If so, see if you can get a WS job instead (work fewer hours at Target if you need more $$ than WS allows) as you can often study at WS jobs.

The other thing to think about is taking in-person classes instead. Online courses can often be put off, allowing you to fall behind easily. Less likely when you physically have to go to class.

Can you find places to work on campus (like a desk job) or at a local library? Those places might be less strenuous and you may even be able to get some homework done while you are there.

Due to fast pace, it’s easy to fall behind in summer sessions. I think you need to act quickly before you get further behind. Either reduce your hours at work or drop a class. If neither is an option, prioritize school over all non-work related activities for the next few weeks. Often summer sessions are 6-8 weeks. You may need to power through. On your days off, devote whatever time is needed to get caught up. Meaning wake up early, eat, shower, and get working by 900.
