UNABLE TO LEAVE / TRANSFER FROM CC BECAUSE OF MATH!?

I was wondering if anyone has any information on transferring without the required math course. I am a 29 year old non-traditional student who went to college on and off after high school and left my last cc ( which was in 2008) with a 2.1 gpa.

I returned to school at Santa Monica College in 2014 and have maintained a 4.0 gpa and I will have all of my major requirements completed by the end of fall semester. I wanted to start applying for transfer this fall but I do not have a college level math. I haven’t taken a math class since high school which was in 2004! I am planning on taking math in the fall, winter, and spring semester but will still not have a Statistics class on my transcript. Oh, and I’m a Communications Major with hopes to transfer to UCLA or USC. Will I still be denied because of my remedial math courses?? I’ve been told that I will be unable to transfer until I complete Statistics- which means my education will be at a complete stand still for an entire year or possibly longer…FOR ONE CLASS.

If I go through with applying this fall:
GPA 4.0
2 internships as a digital producer at creative advertising agencies (the field of work which I would like to enter after graduating)
4 years of professional experience as the Retail Operations Supervisor for corporate Verizon Communications
2 years as the Retail Technology Trainer for corporate Verizon Communications

Could you CLEP out of one of the earlier math requirements, and thus accelerate when you can take Statistics? Wil your community college accept CLEP, and if they do, what is the minimum score you need on the exam?

Great job so far!

I’m gonna guess you left off around pre-algebra. My college offers a prep for statistics course with placement in algebra OR completion of basic math or prealgebra as a prerequisite. So assuming you can study and retake the placement test to get placement into algebra, you could sign up for that kind of course and complete math in only two semesters.

So the new path is: 1. Place into algebra 2. Take statistics prep 3. Take statistics.
