unable to transfer after a bad freshman year.

I currently feel as if I am in a catch 22 situation as if the world of college is suddenly out of my reach. In high school I went to an alternative, progressive private high school that was much easier and far more nurturing than your typical public high school. I had a 3.0 GPA and I got in to 7 of the 8 colleges I applied to. I decided to go to Drexel University to study fashion design, it was probably the toughest school I got into. When I got there it was a horrible experience that I was not at all prepared for. The work load was insane i was up until 3am or later most nights doing work. I was constantly miserable, exhausted and behind in my work. As a result my gpa plummeted. I have a 2.3 GPA and was actually placed on academic probation this last quarter because I had a 1.9 GPA for the spring term. At that point I had already been to my advisor many times and other places on campus that were supposed to help me and they all seemed to suggest I was in the wrong school and that I would be better off at a traditional semester school with a slower pace. So once I found out I was on probation I decided that they were right and I couldn't go back after having such a horrible experience. I decided I would either go to Moore College of Art and Design or Philadelphia University. I had gotten in to Philadelphia University my senior year and was even offered a scholarship but chose Drexel instead. I didn't think I would have too much trouble getting in but I just got off the phone with admissions and after seeing my transcript from Drexel with the 2.3 GPA they said they couldn't consider me at this time and that they were looking for someone with a 3.0 or higher. So I want to know what is one to do in this type of situation. I would think that colleges would recognize the fact that students transfer because they are not at the right college and their GPAs may have suffered as a result. Has anyone else been in this situation before?

you are on probation at Drexel, as I understand it. Drexel is asking you to return next semester under certain stipulations that should appear in the letter announcing your probation. They probably have asked you to take no more than 12 credits and to earn a 2.5 next semester, or something along those lines. They have NOT asked you to leave, have they? So you could return to Drexel in the fall, right?

If you want to leave Drexel now: When one transfers, one usually has to have a total GPA of 2.5. Some schools more like Philadelphia U, a few less, because transfer schools want the struggling student much less than the original school who has already invested one year in you and would like you to graduate.

So you have to go somewhere that will allow you to transfer with a 2.3, or you have to take classes at Philadelphia U or some other school, maybe a cc, until you can verify to the transfer school (or Drexel) that you’re capable of handling 5 courses a semester and earning a 2.5 or better (2.0 is too close to the probation line, you see).

This is not the end of the world. Lots of students go thru this. I was one. I just wasn’t ready for the workload, and at my first college they had female students and beer. My issue was immaturity. Have you and your Drexel counselors identified yet what issues contributed to your struggles at Drexel? You’ll want to address them before returning to Drexel, for sure, and probably anywhere else full time.

My issues at drexel were mainly caused by my slow processing speed and ADD. I took too long to get the work done, many friday and saturday nights were spent doing homework. I hardly went to parties, I worked to my fullest capacity at Drexel. I also had to drop classes 3 classes over the course of the year, one each quarter. I was very unhappy there and I need a more balanced life where I can have time for some kind of personal/ social life. I stuck it out all year desperately hoping it would get better but it didn’t and it isn’t going to get any better. I need to move on to place where I can do better. Drexel is also very expensive and at this point i would have to take a 5th year which would be unaffordable. I’d rather go somewhere thats easier where I can be on top of my work.

Have you thought about community college for one year, then applying to transfer after that?

Yes I have considered that but I would prefer to go to a four year college sooner than later. I cannot study fashion at community college.

no, but you can take fewer courses there for less money, fulfill the general education credits, and get your GPA up. You have courses you need to re-take, and a good cc would be an inexpensive and easier place to do that than PU.
