Unbalanced Sat Scores?

Hello,

Please note this is not a "chance me" post
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here I go.

I recently got my November SAT scores back and got a 2210. My scores were:
Math - 800
Writing - 790 (Essay - 10)
Reading - 620

How badly will that low reading score affect my college admission process? (I'm looking into a couple Ivy's)

I also realize that I'm not giving you guys a lot information. I know that competitive colleges look at applicants holistically and that SAT scores are only one component of the entire application, but I was still curious if the 620 would significantly affect me.

Other info:
I'm applying to schools as an engineer major.
I'm ED-ing Penn (and I'm a legacy).

Thanks for the time.

Hmm. This is a tough one, but I would say that it would probably draw some attention, but since your overall SAT score is above the 2170 mark, in fact in the 2200 range, they’ll consider probably only the composite seriously. Also, if you did better on a previous test in CR, you can always superscore.

Thanks for the reply  but the problem is that was my highest reading score. My last sat reading was the same 620 :/

I hope they’ll look at it overall.

You can’t take it again? It’s very hard for a school like Penn (even for a legacy, unless you’re multi-generation or your alumni relative is an “important” alum) to accept a student with a CR score below 650.

No I can’t take it again. I applied early decision and will get my result in about 2-3 weeks.
I think 670 is the 25% percentile.
I feel that my high math/writing score could kind of counter that. I was hoping that since I’m applying as an engineer, my math would be more important. Well hopefully I can make it. Thanks for the input though.

Why didn’t you take any subject tests? I feel like you would have a much better shot if you have an 800 on math 1 or 2 because as you said, engineers don’t need as much cr skill

@queenbellevue would it really? Math 2 only tests up to the precalculus level. One’s grade and AP Scores in AP Calculus AB or BC would be much better indicators of math ability.

Who said I didnt take any sat 2’s? I actually took:

Math 2: 790
Physics: 740
Math 1: 730
Chem: 700

I agree with jarjar, I did take BC calc and got an A in the course plus a 5 on the exam.

CR is pretty important - colleges want to make sure you have good enough critical thinking/reading comprehension skills. I know you can’t do anything for ED anymore, but IF you don’t get accepted to Penn, maybe look into taking it again. The CR can really hurt your chances for some ivies. Even a 660 CR would be good.

Yeah I agree. I don’t think I want to take it anymore times though. This is my third time taking it and I don’t want a fourth. I’ve improved a lot though. My first two scores were 1950 and 2080. Hopefully I’ll be okay. Thanks for the help!

I agree with @HvePassion. That 650 barrier is a pretty big one for top-20 schools (or thereabouts).

Do you think the 30 point difference (I’m guessing 1-3 questions) is that big of a deal?

How are your grades in English/humanities courses? You have perfect scores in nearly two out of the three SAT sections. I doubt they will dismiss you just because of that. If you did well in those courses in high school and/or you have a good positive recommendation from one of them, they might come to the conclusion that those records are a better indicator of your ability than an standardized test scores

I’ve gotten all A’s in English but I never took AP, only honors. So that might be bad.
