Looking to transfer to UNC after my my first year of college (applying as a Sophomore)
I also applied out of high school knowing my chances were slim but I wanted to show interest (out of state)

Two strong LORs
One from college professor and the other from a high school teacher who knew me very well
Essay:
I think my essay is pretty strong and my short answers are good too i talked about the community aspect of chapel hill and how the small town feel is the best fit for me (compared to Columbia, SC, where i am now)
@martintrevor honestly, I think you have close to the same chance as me. I’ve been told I have a good to greet chance and a little over 50 percent. We have the same ACT, multi sport athlete, had a 3.9 HS GPA, I volunteer, and have good LORs. So I would say close to my chances. I can send you my complete set of stats if you want to compare
@BryantB02@martintrevor Yeah I agree with BryantB02; you guys have very similar chances. Since you applied in high school, I think that increases your chances because they know you are interested and will be more likely to attend if accepted. Also your ACT score is above average, however your GPA is a bit low for USC. I don’t want to give you false hope and say you’re an easy admit, but your chances aren’t necessarily bad either. Given last year’s acceptance rate of 44% and the strong essay and LORs, I think you will be admitted, but it will be close.
@johnpfc3 when you gave me my chances, you stated that my ACT was below average and I have the same score as @martintrevor so was that a misunderstanding? Just curious, not trying to be disrespectful or anything
@BryantB02 Yes you’re correct. 26 ACT is actually below average sorry about that. In that case, your chances are pretty close but given that you had a strong performance in other sections of the ACT (despite your composite) I would still maintain you have a greater than 50-50 chance at acceptance.
I tried through the common app but the advisors couldn’t get in for some reason so they had to send them in. Either way is acceptable but you should call them
@martintrevor I think everything is moving slower in the admissions office because its after the app deadline and they have lots of transcripts and information coming in from a ton of applicants. The reason why I say they are slower is a few weeks before the deadline I had transcripts and recommendations sent to admissions by email and postal mail and they were able to tell me a day after receiving the documents that they were placed in my file. Then a few days later the items were updated in Connect Carolina. I called admissions today about my final recommendation I had sent to them at the end of last week. Admissions said, it takes about a week or so to process recommendation letters or documents sent to them. The did tell me not to worry that they are just beginning to process applications and that all corresponding documents will be added to my file.
3.43 (after first semester), 3.9 Chem I and Calculus GPA, ranked top 250 in class of 1300. Dean’s List for Fall 2016.
I will have 34 credit hours after my first year
HS GPA:
3.4UW, attending a strong New England Prep School with 100% 4 year college placement rate
SAT:
2230 (770 Math, 710CR, 750 Writing)
EC:
Student Body President in HS
West Point Ski Patroller with outdoor emergency care certifications
Did extensive biochem summer research that was presented at an international dental research fair
4 Years varsity baseball, captain two years
Section leader in HS Orchestra as cellist
ROTC (I guess? Everyone at West Point is considered active duty US Army)
Essay:
My essay highlights the fact that I want to pursue a career in military dentistry which is not offered directly out of West Point, and how I want to pursue this at UNC through their ROTC and science programs.
What do you guys think my chances are? I think my background is slightly unique given that I’m attending a service academy. Thanks and best of luck to everyone!
@howsmydriving Your SAT score is amazing, and for that alone, I think you have a great chance of getting in. I believe the targeted GPA for transfers is around a 3.6/3.7, so you are just a little bit under. However, your current school carries A LOT of prestige. I think that your SAT and credibility from West Point give you a really good chance!
