UNC 2017 Transfer Student Thread

Hello all! I am new to cc and applying to a few schools. I figure I might as well post my stats and would love some honest feedback, no matter how harsh. I do not want to have any regrets when applying to schools. So, I am applying to schools that I know are a big reach.

Objective

HS GPA 3.0 – poor, I know:( I explain why in personal statement

MI Community College – 3.84 ( not including Mid-Term report, which is a 4.0)

Large upward trend

Fall 2015 – 3.668 (A- in Introductory french 1, but A in Intermediate 1 and A in IM 2 on MD report)

Winter 2016 – 3.82 (A- in introductory french 2, but A later in Intermediate 1 and A in IM 2 on MD report)

Summer 2016 – 4.0

Fall 2016 – 4.0

Winter 2016 – 4.0 on mid-term report

I have All A’s except for 3 A- and a B- in Fall 2015 in honors comp-1

I received an A in english comp-2.

My course load is very rigorous. It is as hard as it gets for a CC. Several honors courses

A’s in honors micro, honors gov, intermediate french 1, statistics, macro, and several more. I will graduate with an Associate of Arts this semester with honors.

ACT–did not submit – junior standing

Personal Statement

I poured my heart into it. In hs, both my parents lost their jobs, my home was foreclosed, we relied on others for housing, my family went on food stamps, and I worked at McDonald’s to support my family. I explained how this resulted in my fascination for all things related to government and as a result, wanting to major in poli sci with the intention of becoming a lawyer. I also explained how a higher education will allow me to support my mom. I think it explains my life, motives, and why I am doing what I am doing. TBH very proud of it. Overall 9.5/10 IMO

Supps
good, not great. Did not put much effort into these, but they are not terrible.

LOR-- I have three. One from French, Econ, and head of honors program and experiential learning. I believe they are all excellent.

EC’s – I will only list college.

Work at McDonald’s for several hours a week

Elected president of leadership club.

VP of an academic club

Volunteer work with Dementia Patients

Very involved in my chabad. I’m very active in the Jewish Community

Leader of Jewish youth group

Research this summer at U of M–Ann Arbor

Again, I realize this is not a chance me thread, but would love to interact with all of you about the transfer process

@Goingforclacking I’m so sorry to hear about your situation but applaud you for trying to turn it into an experience that you embrace. Your grades are really good and are within what the average UNC takes. In all honestly we never know if we are a shoe-in, or not. But, I hope you get in!

@hopefulapp43 thank you so much! This process is often arduous and stressful so your words definitely help. It’s so nice to speak with others about this – thank you

T-minus 3 weeks

I know it will probably be closer to 3 weeks but I’m hoping it’s more like 2 weeks because I’m impatient as always. Reservations for transfer orientation start on April 5th or 6th according to their website. But I’m guessing that’s when all slots open and that it is not an indication of when decisions will be available.

@collegexconfused I’m guesing your desire to transfer relates to their loss in March Madness? UNC is still in it, so I think its a better fit for you. In all seriousness you seem to be somewhat competive. Not knowledge enough to state your exact odds.

Not really looking to get chanced but I just wanted to be apart of the thread.

I go to a community college in NC now, originally from Virginia (where I went to high school), and I’m applying to NC State and UNC and also a local college as a backup. I really want to to UNC though because I’m majoring in English. I’ll be a junior in the fall.

GPA: 3.3 (not great I know)
Extra curriculars: phi theta kappa and working for an electrical company
SAT Score (new SAT): 1330

Honestly I’m probably not the average student who applies but I’m hoping that they’ll look at me in a holistic way. I’m a minority and my dad is a disabled vet. Not to toot my own horn but I think I’m a pretty good writer and I hope that shows on my common app

@gnmnc11 just curious, what was your HS GPA?

No one has heard a concrete date for decisions, correct? What have they been in the past?

@MuffinCups Nope :/. But regular decisions for first years come out this week so then we become the main focus! Last year they came out around the 14th. Looking back at the older transfer forums, they seem to be around then, the earliest being the 10th.

I don’t know how these emojis work or get autocorrected but that was a : /

Crazy weeks ahead

Last two years have been the second Thursday of April, but the previous years were Wednesday and Tuesday so we can expect April 10-13 around

I wish it was this week haha

There are 4 week before I will finish my semester. I need time to study haha

I meet with my advisor at my current university for spring advising. UNCW Fall registration starts next week. I have my classes selected and will be registering just in case I don’t get in to UNC.

Graduated with a 3.4… again probably not the usual applyer. I wonder if getting my assosicates degree in three semesters is impressive

@gnmnc11 yeah your college and HS GPAs are below average but you can make up some for it with your essays, LOR, or ECs

Just got an email from UNC saying that they needed more information from a school counselor about a small disciplinary violation I received in the tenth grade? Very confused about why they need any more information especially since it was such a small incident and 4 years ago. I didn’t even have to provide additional information about the incident to schools last year…
