UNC 2017 Transfer Student Thread

In addition if you are transferring 65-75 hours of credit. You must complete 64 hours or so at UNC regardless to graduate.

Hey, I was just figuring I’d try and find out my chances.
I’m applying as a sophomore from NC State, I applied last year to transfer but it didn’t work out. I have a 3.7 GPA now, and I have a few extracurriculars like work and involvement in the pre health club. I’m not so sure high school information is very helpful, but I had a 3.9 GPA, a 24 on the ACT, and a 1650 out of 2400 on the SAT. Thanks for any feedback!

Hello.

I’m trying to transfer from a South Carolina community college.
My stats:

Highschool: GED student ( I came from Vietnam and have just been here for 3 years).
Major: Computer Science.
College GPA: 4.0 / 4.0
Transferable credits: 42 credits. (not include 16 credits in 2017-Spring)
ACT: 26
New SAT: I’ll take it in January 21st.
Letters of recommendation: 2 letters - one of chemistry professor, one of Honors program director.
Club/Organization: Honors Program, Phi Theta Kappa.
Extra activities: part-time job ( 25 hours/week after school, and 40 hours/week in summer)

I’m glad to discuss with all of you!
Thank you!

ScQuan- It looks like you would have a very good shot!

Jdrew153- So did you get wait-listed? or did you not put together a great application? But the only thing is that you were still under high school grades and they used that in their decision. But now that you are a sophomore you should be good to go and not judged on your high school performance, but your growth as a student. Just make sure you have LOR’s and write about why you wanna go to UNC. Do not be generic. Also do not feel bad I was wait-listed last year and denied finally June 30 i think.

Yeah I got waitlisted and then denied around the same time. But I appreciate the help!

So . . .

Transferring from a NC CC as a rising junior with 62 hours, however I plan on attending UNC’s open summer school.

College GPA: 4.0 / 4.0
7 year army veteran thus my SAT and ACT are too old to matter. I would take it again but am afraid of the score I would get considering I have been out of high school for 7 years now and they say that rising juniors are not required to submit SAT/ACT scores.

Solid essay, and LORs

That is about all I got. I figured spending 2 years at a community college with perfect grades would make up for my 2.7 in high school (on a 7 point scale, not sure that they care).
What do you think? lackluster or solid?

@mcreallly not an expert but I would think: 4.0 GPA + Veteran + good essays/LOR’s = good chances

Hi, I am currently a freshman at a community college in Pennsylvania (very good reputation) and I will be applying for transfer to UNC-CH in Fall 2017.

-Applying for business
-I will have 32 credits by the end of my spring semester
-Will have completed writing requirement by the end of spring
-Completed Calc 1
-4.0 GPA in the fall, assume I will do just as well in the spring since the classes shouldn’t be any more difficult
-Will likely have lots of, if not all of the general education curriculum taken care of (USC is my #1 target and I’ve molded my course load to knock out as many university, business school, and GE requirements as possible)
-HS GPA was a 2.78 UW (I think) … very bad, I am aware lol
-1150/1600 on the SAT … also not very impressive

Don’t really have nay EC’s, I’m applying to UNC and some other schools in hopes of having options to choose from come spring, but as I said I am really banking on USC so I don’t know too much about UNC’s transfer admissions, and would really appreciate it if someone could give me their opinion on my chances, so I can have an idea of where I might stand.

Thank you and good luck to everyone else!

Hello everyone, I think now’s as good a time as ever to jump into this thread!
Some of my stats:
University of Portland, will have 32 credits completed after this year along with two AP scores of 4
3.94 GPA
Economics Club Vice President
Member of Alpha Kappa Psi (business fraternity)
Member of Finance Club, Investment Club, Ultimate Frisbee Club, and Entrepreneur and Innovation Club
Bloomberg Terminal Certified

High School (not quite as strong)
GPA 3.83
Varsity Baseball 3 years
Peer to Peer teaching with freshman

SAT: 1350/1600 (retaking Jan. 21st, aiming for 1450)

If I do get accepted, I plan on applying for Kenan Flagler after a semester. Should I be applying to UNC for Business Administration, or would Economics give me a higher chance of acceptance since my EC’s match up with Econ a little better? Thanks everyone and good luck to you all!

Being only a rising a sophomore you can always be undecided. But I believe they prefer students who know what they want.

Hi, I have a few questions in regards to my chances of receiving acceptance to UNC. To make a long story short, I started high school off strong maintaining a 3.7 UW throughout my first two years. I didn’t care so much about school after that and needless to say I graduated high school with a 3.1 W.

However, during my senior year I began my first internship with a startup tech-recycling company. After my time there was up, I started another internship with a corrugated board manufacturing plant as a quality lab technician.

Last January I was hired full-time as a quality lab technician working 40 hours a week M-F. I started school this fall at my local CC and ended up with a 3.54 GPA after the first semester, taking full-time credit hours and still working at my internship 40 hours a week.

I haven’t taken the SAT or ACT, as those things were of little importance to me during high school unfortunately.

I have also started a website/blog that I work on frequently. If you’d like to read some of my writing: www.fishfliez.com

I plan to apply to UNC as a rising Junior. Given my current achievements and limitations, what should I do between now and the end of my sophomore year to better my chances of acceptance?

Being a rising junior your high school grades will not factor in their decision. Just put the best application you can together and cross your fingers. Last year seemed to be a 3.6-4.0 standard, but there was some of those who were accepted with lower gpa’s. Their are always circumstances that may not allow an individual to have the greatest of gpa. Their process is truly holistic, because I am prime example I was waitlisted with a 2.24 cumulative. Yeah I know! Well its a long story and I had a rough start in school for several years and took time off to start anew. I started a new college pathway and have average around 3.5 science GPA ever since. I will be a rising junior as well. I have been involved with shadowing physicians, supplemental instructor anatomy and physiology, and PKA honor society etc. I have finished my the prerequisites for UNC Biology requirements. Including the Organic Chemistry classes and to say them classes are anything but difficult is a understatement.

If you’re talking about applying for next fall, I think you have plenty of time to build a solid application. Of course, keep up your grades, and make sure you are taking classes that keep you on track to graduate in 8 semesters (including those at your cc). If you live nearby, go talk to admissions. Schedule a tour. They know me by name now as I’ve gone in person to ask questions. Start singing out friends to help with editing your essays. Keep your job and keep up the good work! Get to know your professors. Find one that you really like and make sure they recognize you and your accomplishments and get a recommendation from them when the time comes. If you are applying for this fall, you don’t have as much time but it’s still doable.

We just started this semester and I already want to be done!

Who is going into Arts & science department?

Chances for a current freshman at University of South Carolina
3.7 GPA after first semester
30 ACT
4.4 weighted high school gpa

Your high school grades will still be factored in as a freshman.

@usctransferstudent I think your chances are good Your school appears to be decent and your GPA and ACT score are at the very least the above average stats of admitted transfer students to UNC.

How does the credit transfer thing work? If I have received higher than an C grade, will they accept it?

Yes to c as long as they accept the course
