Freshman at the University of Florida, in my first semester and looking to be a sophomore transfer.
High school GPA: 3.9/4.0, weighted 3.95
ACT: 28
Current college GPA: 4.0/4.0 (finals still left to be taken, been working super hard and hoping to maintain 3.8+)
High school achievements…
3 sport Letterman, student body VP, Spanish club president, sports captain of two different teams, student government executive director, had two jobs, volunteered with two different organizations in my community consistently, etc
College so far…
leadership within my sorority, member of a sports media club, competed and placed in a debate competition, as a first semester freshman I’ve had limited opportunities but really trying.
Applied last year, however I am out of state (also out of state student at Florida currently) and I was rejected EA.
Major I will apply as is Public Relations in the media and journalism college.
@NYCdream1 oh no you seem to have good stats what happened last year? Did you have a lower gpa or are your high school stats not so good?
My high school stats were not too good. I called them and asked about why I was rejected and the admissions counselor told me that it was my junior year grades. She just said to keep it up and reapply.
Hello all, I’m glad someone made this thread! I also aspire to transfer to UNC in the fall. Let me know what you think about my stats, any comments would be greatly appreciated!
My stats:
Male, Hispanic from North Carolina (In state), low-income, first generation, rural community, currently attend a North Carolina Community College (I don’t want to disclose what community college, but it is very small compared to others).
Intended Major: Double major in Biology and Psychology
College GPA: 4.0 (End of this semester)
Credits: 27 (At the end of December)
College extracurricular:
-Student Government Association Vice President (volunteer for any events that SGA gets involved with).
-Community College News Paper (I am a editor).
-Food Distribution (Help prepare for food distribution for community college students).
I plan on becoming a tutor for classes that I took this semester. I was not able to do this this semester because it is my first semester of college. I would like to tutor in Biology, Psychology, English, Spanish, and Sociology. These can be paid positions but also volunteer.
I also plan on volunteering at a local hospital since I’m looking at majoring in clinical psychology in Grad school.
I should be invited to join Phi Theta Kappa, since I will have a 4.0 GPA.
I should be on the President’s List this semester as well.
Since I go to a very small community college, we do not have very many organizations/clubs, but I’ve made the most out of what is offered.
I plan on applying as a Junior transfer and will graduate with a Associate’s Degree in May.
I never took the SAT or ACT in high school, but they are not required for Junior transfers.
High school wasn’t the best for me. I dropped out of High school when I was in 10th grade after failing two class and was failing two AP classes online. I just gave up on school and did nothing for two years. I decided to get my GED and did this year, after I enrolled at my local community college and have worked harder than I ever have. I took nine classes this semester and have maintained all “A’s”.
So, what are my chances? What can I do to increase them?
Any comments will be greatly appreciated!

So this is my second time applying. Finishing up my first sem of undergrad, I had a 4.0, I volunteered and I was in a few organizations. My high school GPA was a 4.41 (weighted) and a 3.5 (unweighted). I retook the SAT and got a 1300/1600. I was a chemistry major following the pre-med track. My advice to everyone who is a freshman and wants to transfer, I am sorry but you will have the lowest chance of getting in. This is because they like to fill up their second-year students before going into the freshman transfer. The reason why they do this is that they believe that one semester of college is not enough to reflect 4 years of high school. In other words, if you were not very successful during your high school career, that 4.0 during your first semester will most likely not make up for it. Students who get accepted from freshman year typically have competitive high school statistics. Since biology and chemistry are the most common transfers, people applying to transfer to science-related departments are not usually treated equally as other students from business, etc. Unless you have some extracurriculars that really makes you stand out, I would not get hung up on this school. I apologize and I do not mean to bring anyone down but this also happened to a few of my friends who had their heart set on UNC. It is an awesome school but make sure that you don’t commit to it in a way that is going to hurt you if you do not get in. Sorry for the blabbering, I really hope this helps you guys out! Feel free to ask me any questions!!
Seems like most of the people here are sophomore transfers. I’m attending an NC Community College and i’m applying to transfer as a junior, so hopefully most of my decision will mostly be based of off my college performance rather than high school.
- Intended Major: Economics
- Transferable Credits: 61
- College GPA: 4.0 (Presidents list 3 semesters in a row)
- High School GPA: Not good
- ACT/SAT: Wont be disclosing as Junior applicants do not have to
–Extracurriculars–
- North Carolina Scholars of Global Distinction Graduate (Rigorous intercultural program started by UNC to partner with community colleges, somewhat of a gateway program)
- Senator for Student Government Association
- Secretary/Liaison for Student Welfare Committee
- Member of Phi-Theta-Kappa (National CC honors society)
- Hourly Manager at McAlister's Deli (Worked part time throughout my entire college career)
If anybody could honestly chance me i would very much appreciate it. I feel fairly confident, but i cant help but be anxious as UNC has always been my dream school.
I think you have a solid shot. I’ve met with admissions at UNC and two of the things that they seem to value the most are perseverance and growth. They get plenty of applicants that have a perfect GPA/SAT/ACT, ect. Grades and scores are important, but you have to try and make yourself stand out, which you seem to do very well. If i were you, i would consider writing your essay on how your experience with high school changed you, and how you overcame it.
Best of luck!

I have the professor I was closest to this past semester writing my rec, so it should be solid. Also working really hard to make my essays stand out. What are some things I should be focusing on to improve my application? Are my stats too low?
Hi everyone, I am not sure yet whether to apply as a junior or sophomore as this is my first year out of high school, though I plan to graduate with an Associate’s degree in May.
NC resident (CC student)
Major: Exercise Science
Credits: 40 (will be 60 by summer)
College GPA: 4.0
High School GPA (class of 2017): 4.3427(W), 3.6008 (UW)
SAT: 1210/1600 (low but I’m hoping it won’t matter since I may be a Junior)

Ultimate Frisbee team captain (3 years)
Beta Club (senior year of High School)
Phi Theta Kappa member (current)
Part time cashier at local Grocery store
Fellowship of Christian Athletes
Babysitting
Volunteer at soup kitchen (20-25 hours)
I’m worried that my extracurriculars are lacking, so I hope my essays will boost me a little. I wrote about how moving many times in my life presented a challenge that helped me become adaptable and grow as a student in addition to introducing me to people, places and ideas that helped shape who I am. I am also worried about only having one full semester of college work done outside of high school, though I have a fair amount of Dual enrolled and AP credits. If anyone has any idea of my chances, it would greatly be appreciated.
Can someone chance me, please?
My stats:
Will apply as junior transfer
Current school: University at Buffalo
