Essays: Okay, my common app one is either good or weird, can’t tell (could be interpreted as either). One of my UNC ones is good, the other is alright
Teacher Recommendations: Both good, one by a UNC alum but they probably didn’t know that
Counselor Rec: Decent probably, but she doesn’t really know me too well
State: Rhode Island
School Type: Small public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Strengths: I have good test scores, grades, and ECs, but these are just average in the UNC OOS applicant pool.
Weaknesses: Test scores are good, but not good enough. I have no hooks, am OOS, and have nothing that truly stands out about my application
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m OOS, which is extremely competitive for UNC. I was expecting to get deferred or maybe accepted, so the rejection came as quite the surprise. But at least this will make my decision easier.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Boston College (honors program!), University of Miami (with a scholarship!), and Fordham. Deferred: Georgetown
General Comments: You’ll end up at a great school no matter what. One thing that I’ve learned through this process is that it’s not only good to go to a school that you want to go to, but to also go to a school that wants YOU! Congrats to everyone who got into UNC though

Decision: Accepted

In State or Out of State: In State

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): didn’t take it
ACT: 35
SAT II: Chemistry 800 Math level C2 800 Japanese 770
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.95
Weighted GPA: school does not calculate weighted GPA
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 10% out of 50 (school does not rank but only give percentile)
AP (place score in parenthesis): Calculus BC (5) AB subscore (5) Chemistry (5) Physics 1 (4)
(My school actually doesn’t offer AP so I took those before I got into my current school)
IB (place score in parenthesis): None
Senior Year Course Load: [Physical Chemistry I, Physical Chemistry I Lab, Linear Algebra, Fundamentals of Classical Physics I, Fundamentals of Classical Physics I Lab, US History until 1877, Intro to Philosophy, Class Piano I] <- 1st semester

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AMC 12 105/150, AIME 5/15, USAAAO Qualifier, US Representative for International Olympiad of Astronomy and Astrophysics 2016 (Honorable Mention on International Olympiad), Hold a patent for an invention (It’s not an award but I thought it was worth mentioning)

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): SciOly club, Math club, Student Government Association, Community Service club… no leadership position haha
Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community Service: long-term (2 months) tutoring at nearby cultural center
Summer Activities: Research at North Polar Region (Svalbard) about Patterned Ground (August 2014)
Family trip to Osaka (July 2015)
Alone trip to Tokyo (July 2016)
US Astronomy Representative Training Camp at MIT (August 2016)
Essays: Common App 8.5/10 (Wrote about my life-long aspiration about astronomy)
UNC Supple essay 9.5/10 (Wrote about how Freddie Mercury inspires me as an astronomer even though he is an artist and another one was about imminent crisis of space flotsam invading the atmosphere)
Teacher Recommendation: #1 Math 10/10 (I waived FERPA so I wasn’t sure but when I told him I got into UNC he said he wrote an excellent one for me so I’m guessing 10/10)

2 English 9/10 (She is relatively new teacher and I'm guessing she's still figuring out how to write letter of rec but still she also said I deserve a good letter of rec so I'm guessing 9/10)

Counselor Rec: 9/10 (My counselor usually gives out above average recommendations)
Additional Rec:
State: MO (I am resident in NC but attend school in MO… it’s kinda complicated haha)
School Type: Boarding school
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Strong preparation in Astrophysics… I guess? Or maybe just strong preparation in STEM-field research in general. I tried to incline all my activities to science or astronomy related activities to make the ‘hook’ and I guess it worked out pretty well.

Strengths: ACT, GPA, EC(Olympiad)
Weaknesses: No leadership position
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Princeton (deferred) Georgia Tech (deferred)
General Comments: Well I guess my status as In-state applicant really helped me out a lot here. I just want to say that public schools have that inevitable inclination towards their states’ applicants and therefore for OOS it is a different ball game. Same for UNC! Maybe if I applied as OOS my chances might have been slim. So don’t be sad even if you got rejected/deferred from UNC. You’ll be fine wherever you go.

(Sidenotes, I would love to answer any general questions about my results/stats so please do not hesitate to DM me if you have any questions)

Strengths: ACT score, in state, additional rec, ECs

Why you think you were
accepted/deffered/rejected: I worked hard and took my testing seriously.
General Comments: I’m super happy and relieved to have gotten in. I’m fortunate to be in state even though I think I’m a pretty competitive applicant. I’m waiting on 3 ivies but I don’t have much hope so UNC is a great fallback. I can definitely see myself having fun and being successful here. Congrats to everyone accepted and good luck to those not, I’m sure you will find a great school. Seems weird that the wait is over. I remember reading the results of the 2019 and 2020 classes live. I even posted an annoying “what are my chances” thread as a young junior haha. I’d say they’re very good now lol.

Job/Work Experience: N/A
Volunteer/Community service: Helping out in church, visiting the elderly in my tribal community

Essays: I talked about my tribe, Haliwa-Saponi and Costa Rica with renewable energy, and also for my personal statement via Common App, I talked about getting “C” and “D” for math in Freshmen and Sophomore and how I did not let one terrible teacher stop me from being a high “B” in a college math class in Senior first semester
Teacher Recommendation: I chose my English teacher that I had for English III and English IV, so it was probably great.
Counselor Rec: This was good I think, I guess, I do not know.

Strengths: I think my essays did it for me.
Weaknesses: I would say math in freshmen and sophomore year due to my math teacher being horrible :frowning:
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I was accepted because my experiences were unique and my schedule was unique as well.
General Comments: I am VERY PROUD OF EACH OF YOU–whether you got accepted, deferred, or rejected, please understand that you are worthy. Also, dreams come true since as a person who is from a rural part of in-state, that had to do most of this college stuff on my own, I never thought this would happen but dreams come true if you are genuine. Also, be authentic and take risks!!

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM

Strengths: GPA, strong ACT score (for in-state), I think personally my essays are really good, I was able to demonstrate my passion for music and I think that’s what put me over the top if my scores/essays hadn’t yet.
Weaknesses: Not a whole lot of AP classes because block schedule at my school made me take overall less courses as well as presenting conflicts between certain AP classes that I could only take as an upperclassmen due to prerequisites. However, my senior year did not have any conflicts because I now have all of my prerequisites so all of my classes are AP classes (except for psychology).
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: GPA, test scores, essays, demonstrated passion for music.
General Comments: It has been so much fun interacting with everybody on this forum. Witnessing people freaking out as much as me was relieving and provided some comfort in the uncertain times. It is amazing to see some of the people I’ve seen posting since October finally getting their dreams realized. It’s also great to see the attitude of those who did not get in, as they are all brilliant students as well who will strive in any setting. I look forward to trying to aid next year’s class through this process now that I have a bit of understanding on it and I hope I can be active in admissions throughout my time at UNC. THANK YOU EVERYBODY!

Essays:

Recommendations:
Teacher Rec. #1: 10/10. My Stats teacher who has caused everyone who has read the essay to cry.
Teacher Rec. #2: 9/10. My Spanish teacher. I’m apparently the best-speaking student he’s ever had.
Counselor Rec.: 8/10. I’ve had a lot of face-time with my counselor to work out schedules and things.
Additional Rec.: 8/10. From my football coach who says that I’m the smartest player he’s ever coached, but it’s not very specialized.

Strengths: Rank/weighted and course load, I also thought my ECs were meaningful too.
Weaknesses: My SAT for in-state is above average, but it could have certainly been better; my essays were not the greatest things ever, although I will credit them with being authentic and honest with who I am and how I think.
Why you think you were accepted/rejected/deferred: Being in state is the only reason I got in. I’ve seen the data, and it’s true. Period. Thanks for allowing me to vent on this forum, everyone! Let’s keep the admissions season going strong!

Decision: Accepted
OOS - Legacy
ACT 36
GPA 3.92/4.0
NMSF, NHRP, NHS
Journalism Club, Arabic Club, Piano/Guitar and others
URM

But the one thing I was concerned is that she has no AP or IB as her school doesn’t offer them as it has a specialized curriculum (project-based). It also doesn’t rank. So having AP/IBs aren’t necessary if your school doesn’t offer them.
