Counselor Rec: no clue
Additional Rec: none
State: North Carolina
School Type: Large Public
Ethnicity: Amasian
Gender: Female
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Strengths:
Weaknesses: GPA and Weighted GPA
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My essays were really fun and light-hearted and my published paper hopefully separated me from the crowd, also IS
General Comments: I was a transfer student who was forced to move to an extremely competitive public school before junior year. I was extremely depressed and dejected because the new school was destroying my life, like seriously, no one likes it here. My grades suffered the whole year and I ended up with 3 B’s. My weighted GPA was terrible because my former school had 9 periods in a day and made us take 2-3 mandatory 4.0 weighted electives. So while my friends had weighted GPAs at or above 5.0, mine was right around the 4.5 range, even though I was on the same level as them. This affected my class rank and caused me to have anxiety (slept at 4 am every night) about the college process for a long time. So for future applicants reading this, if you are in a similar spot, I just want to say, please don’t stress!!! You’re hurting yourself and it’ll all be okay  If something in your application is unusual, ask your counselor to put it in his/her rec and also write about it in additional info. Although I got extremely screwed over, I still got into college! Good luck future applicants!! You all deserve the best!!

Decision: Deferred

Essays: everyone that read them really liked them and I thought they reflected my personality
Teacher Recommendation: 10/10 on both I’m super close with my english and math teachers and they are both known for writing great recs and I did really well in both classes
Counselor Rec: 9/10 I love my counselor and we are also very close so I can’t imagine it was bad but she does have to write a ton so idk
Additional Rec: N/A

Intended Major: applied undecided
State: VA
School Type: small private school
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: $200,000+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I’ve taken Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus in high school idk if that’s a hook?

Other accepts/rejections: Accepted UVA, Accepted University of Southern Cal with a quarter scholarship, deferred Yale

Strengths: ECs, Test Scores, GPA, Recs, Honors
Weaknesses: essays maybe? even though I was really confident, possibly not enough APs
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I hate to think its because I’m a white female from VA but that what every one keeps telling me, maybe it was because I applied undecided? I’m really upset because UNC was one of my top choices, and to be quite honest I was either expecting an accept or deny I don’t really know how to deal with this deferral process.

[B]Reflections:*
Strengths: my test scores are great - my extracurriculars are solid - my recommendations are solid
Weaknesses: I should’ve put more effort into having a hook they could define me as - in my application it is unclear “what” “type of student” I am - I’m all over the place - my school is also very competitive which deflates my gpa and rank
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: they didn’t get to my application or cause I’m OOS and not a “special interest” student
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: deferred -UMIch UVA rejected - UPenn and UNC

Essays (rating 1-10, details): 8- strong overall, common app essay is pretty basic but well-written. Supplements were carefully planned and executed fairly well.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): 8- strong, from two teachers (History and BC Calc) who know me well as a student. I also got an additional rec from the director of my summer camp.

(Haven’t read any recs- these are all just speculation)
Teacher Rec #1 (rating 1-10, details): 10, History teacher who taught me 9th and 11th grade. She knows me very well and has seen me grow a lot as a student.

Decision: Deferred

In State or Out of State: OOS

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1450
ACT: 34
SAT II: Math II, 700 & Molecular Biology, 720
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Weighted GPA: 4.417
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1%
AP (place score in parenthesis): Biology (4), European History (4), English Language and Composition (4), Calculus AB (3), Physics C: Mechanics (3)

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar with Distinction

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Travel Soccer, High School Soccer (Co-captain), Academic Team
Job/Work Experience: Lifeguard for the past three summers.
Volunteer/Community service: NHS, Volunteer at library, hospital, and a camp for those with disabilities. LOTS of volunteer hours.
Summer Activities: Volunteering and working.
Essays: I am generally fairly strong with my essay writing, and my teachers that reviewed them said that they were very good.
Teacher Recommendation: A great recommendation from my physics teacher with personal anecdotes and everything. I was not allowed to read the others, the English teacher I asked knows me pretty well and is a good writer.
Counselor Rec: Has known me for a long time and wrote recommendations for other things that I have been accepted to.
Additional Rec: A lady that organizes the volunteering I do at the library, has known me since seventh grade.
State: Virginia
School Type: Small public high school in central Virginia. I also attend a Governor’s School that is in the mornings at a nearby college.
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/A

Strengths: I have a solid ACT and my essays were pretty good.
Weaknesses: My GPA is lower than many out of state students, but that is something beyond my control. Our school is too small for a large AP program or to have an IB program. I have the highest possible GPA I could earn in the school I go to. I don’t have many leadership roles.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I was deferred because admissions is looking to see if I am in the top 18% of the OOS students or not. I’m right on the edge.
General Comments:
