Summer Activities:
-Attended Congress of Future Medical Leaders Summer Before Junior Year.

-Summer Job (Stated Above) before senior Year.

-I basically chilled a lot during the summer while getting things done (college apps, SAT prep, Eagle project, etc.) Make sure you enjoy yourself during your summers off
Essays (rating 1-10, details): I spent a lot of time on these and they were great! Essays definitely not a reason for deferral.

Teacher Rec #1: Genetics Teacher- since its an elective, she gets very little rec letters to do, so I definitely think she put time into writing them. Also She really thought Highly of me she emailed my parents multiple times about me (Good things!)
Teacher Rec #2: Calc teacher- I was the only one that took interest in calc lol everyone else in my class goofed off while I actually tried to learn. I think he saw that in me!
Counselor Rec: Good! Every Student in my school had to fill out a survey detailing what the counselor should write about in your rec. Also, she also knows me by name which is rare in a large public school; that must be a good thing.

Intended Major: Bio/premed
State (if domestic applicant): NJ
School Type: Large Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Strengths: Grades, SATs, Recommendations, Eagle Scout, Interview, Leadership
Weaknesses:
-My schedule could have been more rigorous… I took 3 AP and 2 Honors junior year while my buddies were grinding on 5-6 APs (I might have watched every family guy episode that year)
-I went very thin on humanities/social sciences classes to make room for extra science classes. My lack of English/History/Gov classes could’ve hurt me
-No ridiculously unique EC’s. Just typical Stuff.

Why you think you were deferred:
Out of state is competitive. My schedule could’ve been more rigorous, but it must have been rigorous enough considering I got into Georgetown…

Reflection:
I was honestly shocked that I got deferred, considering that I just got into Georgetown unhooked. This speaks volumes about how competitive it is getting in to a ‘public ivy’ out of state. The average SAT of UNC might be very low compared to my stats, but that is considering majority of the slots are reserved for in-state students only; the rest of the country (Out of state) is competing for a small piece of the class. In addition, the fact that they won the NCAA march madness probably attracted more applicants, making it more selective. All in all, I’m not disappointed because I’m most likely going to Georgetown anyways! I just think it’s funny/odd that I got into a reach school like Georgetown but not UNC.

Where else applied:
Accepted to Georgetown (Top Choice!!!)
Accepted Case Western with 28k/yr merit
Accepted to Rutgers
Deferred UNC Chapel Hill (Out of State)
Rejected from REMS program at University of Rochester, still waiting to hear from the school itself

Comment:
Seriously, you’re all great. Everyone will end up in the college they are meant to be in, whether it be Harvard, or a state school. Good Luck with everything!!!

-Model UN Club (President)
-French Club (President)
Job/Work Experience: N/A
Volunteer/Community service: I didn’t put any volunteer work on any of my college apps. The work I did was pretty meaningless.
Essays (rating 1-10, details):
-Common App essay: 10/10, about a protest I organized.
-UNC specific ones: I tried to highlight my writing ability. Honestly, I thought they were a little cheesy, but evidently they were good! One of them was about a weird radio station I listen to and used really informal language, the second was more of a creative writing/philosophical piece describing family friends and meditating on ambition and success.
-UNC resume: I applied for Contemporary European Studies, EURO-TAM and everything, and so I chose three activities relating to that and really, really elaborated. Each description was 1-2 paragraphs and really emphasized what it was and how it had an impact on me.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): I waived my rights, so I honestly don’t know.

Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major and College: Contemporary European Studies
State (if domestic applicant): New Jersey
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Suburban public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket:Upper middle class (though that’s changed, my dad is unemployed af right now)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/A

Reflection:
Strengths: I think that my school specific resume was really what did it. Contemporary European Studies is a major unique to UNC, so I think they could see that I really, really wanted it and really, really wanted to go to UNC. Otherwise, it was definitely my leadership roles and my scores and grades.
Weaknesses: Probably my essays. Even though they got me in, I still think they’re SO cheesy. Maybe it’s just the writer in me that’s cringing.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I tend to stand out from your above-average-white-female-suburban-New-Jersey girl, and I think they saw it. I also had a very specific program in mind and really tailored my application to that.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
-Accepted: Rutgers (awaiting merit and Honors College), Miami University in Ohio (Honors and Scholars Programs, $24,000 merit aid), University of South Carolina (Honors College, Top Scholar)
-Deferred: Yale, University of Virginia, McGill (conditional acceptance pending semester grades)
-Awaiting: Harvard, Brown, UPenn, Duke, Vanderbilt, Lehigh, University of Toronto (Trinity College), American, and

General Comments: I was deferred from UVA yesterday and was SURE I wasn’t getting into UNC. Sometimes colleges just see different things in your application. Don’t worry, it’ll all be fine. Where you get in doesn’t define you (a lesson I’m still learning) and everything will work out in the end.

Accept/Reject/Deferred: Rejected
