Reflection

Strengths: academic performance in course load and grades; test scores; recommendations
Weaknesses: essays?
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: although I have the stats, I probably didn’t hone a fine enough image of myself as someone who is very skilled in any one field
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: accepted at UVM (Honors College) and UNH so far

General Comments: I didn’t realize until I was rejected that I was expecting to get in. Goes to show you that you can’t be too confident; being humbled by this decision will probably benefit my character. That said, I applied to UNC because I was nominated for the Morehead, and I would’ve thought that would make my chances extremely good. I don’t really understand the decision, but I suppose it’s for the best; I’ll move on and hope for the best elsewhere

Reflection

Strengths: EC’s, recs, writing to an extent, GPA/grades, ACT writing score, ethnicity
Weaknesses: pretty low test scores for OOS, AP scores (I really thought my 2 on AP Chem would do me in)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: While my app was very strong, I know I was given a huge boost by being a black male at UNC. But all my supplemental aspects were quite stellar. I was also my school’s Morehead Cain nominee and while I didn’t make it to finals, I made it to semifinals
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Deferred Tulane, accepted Florida State, Miami (Ohio), Missouri, Tennessee, Oklahoma

General Comments: Honestly in the weeks leading up to it I was sooo nervous about my chances and thought I might actually get deferred. So many people from my school applied and I was very nervous. Turns out that 5 of us including me got in. Still waiting on a few places but excited to possibly be a Tar Heel! I cried as UNC is my first major competitive university acceptance and the first school I visited. Meant a lot to me. I hope everyone gets good news soon enough!

@berkeley101 They are probably a Chancellor’s Science semifinalist because that is the only Excel that has released its decisions so far.

Reflection

Strengths: 3 research, major-related ECs, competitive arts
Weaknesses: Chinese, no competitive sports, no national awards
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I was not surprised about any outcomes because of my international status. Happy about getting in

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to all schools that I didn’t apply for financial aid, deferred from all schools that I applied for financial aid.

General Comments : for international fellows, congrats to everyone who got in and also congrats to everyone who didn’t. It is so much harder for internationals to beat this system and to be accepted by competitive American colleges. Remember to never punish yourself for a rejection/deferral because there are so many factors beyond your control like ethnicity and nationality. Always trust your ability to accomplish great things anywhere. It’s the school’s loss if they missed you.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 10, from my English teacher of 3 years who knows me extremely well. She knows a lot about my background and I did very well in her classes. Called her my ‘school mom’
Teacher Rec #2: 8, from my Calculus teacher, I got a B in his class but always went in for tutoring and showed dedication to learning the material. He wrote me my rec for MOSTEC too which helped him get to know me
Counselor Rec: 8, she was new my junior year so I made a really big effort to get to know her but she also had 360+ recs to do. I was the first one she got to so maybe not so bad. I was always in her office for things like gov school and MOSTEC
Additional Rec: 10, from my church leader who knew me for 4 years through my consistent volunteering, also knew my family background and educational goals
9, got a peer rec from my close friend. She emphasized my dedication to learning, curiosity, and service

Reflection

Strengths: My summers were very productive- an internship, gov school, and MOSTEC helped a lot. Emphasis on community service and passion for social science. Photography business is unique. Hooks are probably helpful
Weaknesses: Test Scores, also I got 3 B’s my junior year
Why you think you were accepted: I think overall my application is very strong, my extracurriculars and service stand out
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: So far I have been accepted to WashU, USC-Columbia, Clemson, NC State, Fordham, and Washington and Lee

General comments: I think my extracurriculars, service, essays, grades, and unique summer programs really made up for my lower test scores
