UNC 2023 EA Waitlist INSTATE

This thread is for anyone that got waitlisted in-state or anyone who got waitlisted in general. I just want to say that while I am grateful to at least still have a chance… admissions this year must be crazy. While plenty of qualified people are getting in, I see plenty of qualified people are getting waitlisted/rejected (on the forums) as well.

Stats:
Ethnicity: Asian male
SAT: 1360
GPA: 4.4 W
Took 7 APs and lots of dual enrollment courses at community college

Good essays and decent teacher recommendations

Just want to point out that I think my class rank/GPA was the weakest part of my app. I was just outside top 10%

Please comment below … just want to see what those who are waitlisted feel

I read on one of the posts, that some 800+ students got accepted from the waitlist last year- that’s not accurate. 800+ IS students opted to STAY on the waitlist. 13 of those were offered admission, and it’s random. If you do intend to stay on the waitlist, remember to confirm the same. Good Luck!

Does anyone know the number of IS students waitlisted early action?

@sml170 been wondering the same thing did you get waitlisted as well?

My son was waitlisted as well:

4.29 GPA (3.87 unweighted)
1370 sat
4/34 class rank
Sports all 4 years
NHS
8 ap classes -AP scholar with honors Junior year
4 CC classes with a 4.0
100 hours Volunteer

His school doesn’t offer many AP classes so he is supplementing with community college. Not many honors elective options either.

He is frustrated because 2 kids got in from his school with SAT’s in the 1100 range and weighted GPA’s below 4.0.

After a conversation with UNC Admissions, he is moving on. The likelihood of getting in is very slim. They encouraged him to look at transferring from the local community college or picking another college.

A neighbor’s daughter (at UNC) heard that over 4000 students were waitlisted this year!

My waitlisted son’s MyCarolina portal just changed. His Admission Decision link, which led to the waitlist letter is now gone, with only the “Thank you for applying to Carolina.” message that was there in the hours before the EA decisions were put out. Anyone else have this happen? Any idea what it means?

What does https://mycarolina.unc.edu/apply/ say?

It says that the EA application is started and submitted. The application checklist has reappeared on his MyCarolina portal, and I think it was gone before the new message appeared. My son has written to admissions to make sure this doesn’t mean he lost his spot on the waitlist. He clicked to accept his spot immediately upon receiving his waitlist letter, so we want to make sure there is no mistake about that.

Same is true for my daughter as well. Her portal is as you described. She also accepted her spot on the waitlist right away.

Okay, I guess I feel a little better then. Maybe they are trying to make room on the servers for the onslaught when they release RD decisions later this month. I guess it doesn’t mean anything then.

Anyone know how UNC notifies applicants if they are accepted off the waitlist? Will they call or email?

And does anyone know when they will start releasing waitlist decisions?

@SkyeRider20 Hi I have the same issue and only just realized it. May I know if your son has gotten a reply from UNC to confirm that he’s still on the waitlist?

they have already started accepting students off the waitlist

@chapelthrill23 Really!!! Are they sending emails or updating the portals??? There’s still only the line “Thank you for applying to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.” in my portal…

Ikr same!
