UNC and internships?

My son is debating between schools in two major cities (DC and Boston) and UNC. He is concerned about the internships at UNC, not being near a major city. Can anyone speak to the internships available in the Chapel Hill area? Do students have difficulty finding internships in their field of interest? My son is a firm "undecided" right now, but loves to write and is possibly looking at law, however he would like to experience other fields before making a decision on his major.

Thanks!

This may not be directly relevant, but I hope it is at least somewhat helpful.

I’m a prospective student living in Raleigh, NC. Two years ago, I was interested in finding an (unpaid) research internship in the natural sciences. Being only a sophomore in high school, my options were pretty much limited to biology (research in chemistry or physics was much too advanced for me). In the end, I had no problem finding a professor who took me in. Also in the lab were two undergraduates researching as part of their work-study financial aid program, while the rest were graduate students.

I know that none of my son’s friends ever had trouble getting internships both during the school year and during the summers. UNC has one of the top creative writing departments and majors so I am sure that their students are getting plenty of opportunities for internships. Raleigh is close by and being the State capital should offer numerous law related opportunities in a normal environment. I use that caveat because the economy and financial sector collapse has severely reduced job offers in that segment across the country. There are many kids graduating from Law Schools everywhere this year who have had their job offers rescinded.

There’s a former CC poster who was from NJ whose son turned down a Chancellor’s Scholarship at BU for a Davie (before it was a full ride) at UNC. He got an internship his first semester freshman year with a very well known professor who over the years became a mentor to him. He’s graduating in May and as of a month ago had been accepted to grad school at Stanford, MIT and Harvard so far.

The opportunities are there, he will just have to seek them out.
