UNC and UVA: Too homogeneous?

These schools are obviously very committed to the taxpayers of the state, and I can respect that, but how would an OOS student fare in a place where 80% of the kids are in-state and most of them already know each other from high school? I mean, I feel like all the rich snobby semi-geniuses (and geniuses who stayed for financial reasons) go to UVA and UNC instate (that's how it is at UGA).

I can’t speak for UVA, but out-of-state students fare fine at UNC. Think about it: Most people going to a school like UNC in-state will know probably, at most, five other people from their high school who also got into UNC. Of these, there’s a good chance that they don’t like at least one or two of these people, so that leaves them with lets say three friends that they come to school with. Who goes through college with only three friends? As a freshman coming in from basically anywhere you’re put in a dorm, usually with a random person, and you’re forced to meet people. Whether or not you make friends depends primarily upon your social skills, not the town that you come from.

UNC is diverse socially and its a very welcoming school no matter where you are from. Not a worry there at all. UVA is open in terms of welcoming outsiders, although I’d argue the overall scene is much preppier/ snobby/ whatever so it might be more homogeneous in that way.

I don’t see a problem with OOS kids at UNC. I think you will be fine.
