UNC Asheville Help

I am a senior in High school. My all time plan is to go to college in Asheville, because my father lives there. In fact I lived there when I was much younger. I probably will get accepted, but my main concern is campus life at UNCA.

Freshman are required to live on-campus,I have no problem with that except for which dorm to choose. I like rooms that have a lot of natural light and big windows. I really dont care about the size of the rooms, the only thing that I prefer are maybe bigger desks and ordinary walls(not the tile/brick looking ones). If anyone has any recommendations, please help out, since I'll be living there for 2 years at least!

I'm not a huge sports and party fan, don't drink, smoke or do drugs. But then again I do not want a boring environment were nothing is going on. Is the campus life, social scene good there?

What are the people like? Mostly I here that it's a hippies college, for vegetarians, artists, and tree huggers. I don't mind any of that, but are there any "normal" people?

Transportation - Since we are not allowed to have cars first year,I was wondering whats the best transp. alternative. I usually use my bike, but can I use my bike to town,or the local store?

And finally if anyone has something good or bad to say about UNCA please feel free to write something. As you might know, college is a big deal!
Thanks!

bump…!!! anyone?

Hi Boxer007. I’m just a parent who checked out this board today because my daughter has applied to Asheville. I’m no expert on the University, but I can assure you that there are indeed all types of kids at UNCA. My daughter as well as the several kids she knows who already attend are pretty middle of the road, “normal” kids. They too are not into smoking, drinking etc…Hope that helps even a bit.

My son is at UNCA and loves it. There are all types of people at the college; it does seem to be rigorous academically, but sort of laid back socially. The whole thing about college is finding the right “fit” for you. I suggest going and spending a night there and attending a class during the week to get the vibe of the place. My daughter went to visit and didn’t care for it, my son is very happy there. Go for a visit and ask the students questions. As for dorms, I recommend Mills Hall…suites with a bathroom for 4 people, and also a den.

Here’s a link to a blog about the dorms…other dorms can be found on the right hand side…
