At about 6 PM today, UNC extended their Nov 1 early action deadline to Nov 5 at 11 PM. Just wondering if this is unprecedented, or if anyone is aware of this happening elsewhere. Email message said there was extraordinary interest in the online application and the deadline was being extended. Maybe the server is being overwhelmed??

Seems a bit scarey that there is such interest!

Some other servers are being overwhelmed. Some colleges don't have technology capable of handling all the students who put things off to the last minute.

so it may not be more interest, but tech issues, which they don't want to say

um, we are having issues with our site so we are extending the date sounds not great, while because of so much interest we are extending the date

aarrgghhh. S just sent in his UNC-CH application last night. The application took (literally) more than an hour to finish and submit, and all that was left was to upload the essays and short answers. Each page (and there are at least 15 of them, and you can't skip any of them) took ages to load. I'm not at all surprised they extended the deadline...as S was slogging through the pages, I had a vivid mental picture of thosands of others (all with higher test scores and more scintillating ECs, alas) doing the same to make the Nov. 1 deadline.

If it's much slower to do the electronic version, I think I would have gone with the downloadable forms. Last year my D did all her applications via paper vs. the electronic submissions.

Last year MIT extended their EA deadline as well. Don't think UNC did for early notification, since son had his stuff in really early for the Morehead. But they could of and we just didn't notice.

Thanks. Good to know others have had prior experience with this. I'm hoping tech issues are the root of the 'problem' and not overwhelming numbers!! Challenge here is to get the app finished, allowing enough time to do the downloading! 'Found' time can be a mixed blessing, if you know what I mean!

I once worked at a school that extended the deadline every year. We didn't announce it, just sent a note to everyone in the application database saying it was a little gift...apps were usually due on a Friday and we always extended it to Sunday night. It had nothing to do with technology glitches.

And it can also be a way to increase your EA apps. No one will remember next year that they gave extra time to get it in. They'll just remember the listed date at Nov. 1!

Dean J, this is a similar situation. UNC didn't make a big announcement, to my knowledge. They emailed students that had begun the online app process and have a notice on the homepage seen by applicants only after logging into the system. Now that you mention it, a public announcement was not made.
