UNC raided for faculty talent - Education - NewsObserver.com

Its because the state budget deficit is requiring the BOT of UNC to cut a lot of jobs. Many professors are heading for the exits. Its very sad.

Excellent article barrons, thanks for sharing it. South Carolina’s med school sounds like they really picked up a great hire for their new dean.

This is somewhat misleading. The reality is that academia is essentially a free for all right now, with virtually every university trying to muster up money to seize the opportunity to get new professors while desperately trying to keep their old ones.

Take ASU, for example. The article implies that it’s in better financial shape than UNC. Yet when you dig through recent news, you find that ASU laid off 20% of its faculty associates, laid off over 500 administrative staff, eliminated nearly 50 programs, and is predicting classes with (literally) 1000 students.

Interestingly, the big winner currently seems to be UT Austin. It’s picked up some pretty big names (including some from Harvard) with fairly minimal losses.

Well, I’m hopeful that UNC will be able to fight future faculty raids. I’m confident that one way or another we’ll be OK, though. If Yale and Stanford are offering so much to our current faculty, it just shows how impressive these people really are.
