I’m really interested in going to UNC, but I’m wondering if I can get any merit scholarships like Morehead and Robertson. I kinda ruined my GPA but my test scores and extracurriculars are pretty good. I’m wondering if I should apply for Morehead or Robertson (since they are separate applications). Also, I’m in-state! (Is there any advantage for in state applicatns for scholarship?)
GPA: My school doesn’t have GPA but basically I took 5 APs for the first time in sophmore year and I got a B in all of them , I also got a B in my second semester of chemistry, but other than that I got all A’s and always took the most rigorous courses at my school. Also, no class rank.
PSAT: 214 (I got commended but I’m not sure about semifinalist / finalist)
ACT: 33 writing: 11
SAT 2 : USH 760 (Should I submit?)
Extracurriculars: Editor in chief of school newspaper (member 11th, EIC 12th grade), competitive journalism camp junior year, write for 2 pretty big publications (11th - 12th), internship at a local magazine (11th summer), research internship at Georgetown (10th, 11th summer), Science Olympiad lots of small regionals metals, president (9-11th member, 12th president), volunteer ~250 hours, mock trial team state 2nd place (9th), various small team math competitions (9th).
I think i’ll have good recs (one spectacular, one good)
and I think I’d write a pretty mean essay.
For the Robertson Scholars class of 2018, 30 people accepted (15 UNC and 15 Duke). Of the 15,only one was from NC. None of the Duke were from NC. It appears that the scholarships are a recruiting tool for OOS student.
For Morehead-Cain there were 57 scholars. #1 were from NC.
I let you decide what your chances are.
What about the smaller ones? like just 5k and etc?
UNC has very little merit aid available. It would not be easy to predict.
correction: 31 of the Morehead-Cain were NC.
Even the above 3.2% is misleading for in-state. My daughter was invited to Scholarship day and it appeared to be weighted more towards OSS than in-state.
I would not count on a scholarship.
There have been many posts in the past from many strong UNC applicants disappointed that they got ZERO merit.
I hate to put it as bluntly as @bobwallace but…You have nothing to lose by applying if you temper your expectations, even for admission nevertheless scholarships… Just to give you some perspective on how competitive their merit is, they offered S10k a year(not even a semifinalist for Robertson) He was a HPYM admit. He was offered full tuition merit to Vanderbilt, full tuition merit to WUSTL, the Hodson Trust Scholarship and Woodrow Wilson Fellowship at JHU, plus likely letters and special incentives galore at other top schools. UNC is tough!
My daughter did not receive merit money to UNC as an out of state student. We did, however, receive a very nice financial aid package.
Planner03- wow!
Twogirls…UNC meets full financial need for all. Terrific if you have financial need.
But this family doesn’t…apparently…as thy are seeking merit aid which is very limited for OOS students at UNC-CH.
I did not think we had financial need at all. We have a very decent 6 figure income with a house that is practically paid for. When we entered this process we were looking for merit, not FA.
Merit money from UNC is very difficult to get. I know one OOS applicant who got significant merit- he wrote a math book.
