My top two college choices were Northeastern in Boston (#1) and UNC-CH (#2) and I was fortunate enough to be accepted to both schools. While I would love to attend Northeastern, it costs significantly more than UNC at about $55,000 with everything included. I received a $10,000 scholarship but unfortunately that still doesn't make it as affordable as UNC which would run about $20,000-$25,000 for my in-state tuition. I'm torn between both schools and would like to know more about the pre-med programs for both in terms of pre-med advising, the quality of professors in the sciences, etc. While I love Northeastern, I don't know if I can justify spending so much on a private school when I have a great, cheaper option in-state. Let me know your experiences with either schools science/pre-med departments.

To a random outside observer, UNC-CH is better ranked, more selective, and more prestigious than Northeastern. Unless you have some personal preference for Northeastern based on atmosphere or location, I cannot see how the price differential can be justified on the grounds of academic program for a pre-med. If money is a concern and you are going to have to pay for medical school, you should take the instate option in this case. You are lucky that UNC-CH is such a great school.

My own kiddo went to Northeastern but I still agree with NJSue’s thought that UNC-CH would be the ideal, no-brainer choice here. Great academics - and much much cheaper. The money you’d save could buy you a few semesters of med school - or a hell of a trip as a graduation present to yourself :)
