UNC-CH vs. UNC-A

I applied regular decision to UNC-CH and have not heard back yet but I am pretty confident that I will get accepted. So this post is assuming that I get into Chapel Hill.

I've made pros and cons lists for each school:
Pros (UNC-CH):
- Academics (especially in the sciences)
- I'm familiar with the campus/Chapel Hill/triangle area (I've lived here all my life)
- I have friends who go here
- Easier to get into a good grad school?

Cons (UNC-CH)
- I've lived in Chapel Hill forever-- It wouldn't feel like "college"
- Greek Life
- Sports environment (ugh)

Pros: (UNC-A):
- Campus
- Mountains (I love to ski!)
- Smaller school, smaller class sizes
- Friends/family nearby
- Would feel more like "college"
- The town of Asheville is way cooler than Chapel Hill, in my opinion
- Not a big sports environment/greek life

Cons: (UNC-A)
- Not as academically challenging especially for the sciences
- Harder to get into a good grad school?
- Not as reputable as UNC-CH

I feel like I would fit into both schools but I feel like going to UNC-CH wouldn't feel like anything new. UNC-CH would probably put me on a better footing after college but there aren't a lot of things that really jump out and interest me besides the academics. UNC-A, on the other hand, has less reputable academics but there are way more aspects of Asheville that really make me want to go there.

Money isn't an issue, they pretty much cost the same.

I think you’ve set out the pros and cons very well. Here are my thoughts:

I have known plenty of students who grew up in a town then went to college there. Most say it was a totally different experience and they felt like they had gone away to college. If I were you, I would post questions like these in the UNC forum: If you grew up in Chapel Hill, what was it like going to UNC? Did you feel like you hadn’t left home or was it completely different?

UNC-Asheville has a very good track record of its graduates being accepted into their top choices of professional (including law and medical) schools. I don’t know about graduate schools, but you could probably find that out on their website.
