UNC-CH vs. UVA

I live in Virginia and have been accepted early action to both UVA and UNC-CH. I like Chapel Hill a shade more than UVA but... I have the Virginia pre-paid education bond thing. This means that my tuition at UVA would be automatically paid for and all I'd have to pay is room and board. It has really come down to whether I can justify the cost of attending UNC over UVA. What are some pro's and cons of each school? And, which would you choose in my position and why?

Dorian also got into both of these institutions, so I wouldn’t go to either school.

What’s your intended major?

Undecided right now. Most interested in Biology, Chemistry, and Computer Science.

I’m having a similar dilemma between those two schools…have you decided yet?

We faced the same dilemma with our son. We lived in Virgina at the time. He was accepted to both and we had the pre-paid tuition plan in Virginia. Both my wife and I were alums of Carolina’s graduate school where we met. So where did he choose? He wound up at the University of Southern California when he was accepted to the film school.

The point is that unless Carolina has something academically unique that you want go to UVA and save lots of money.

^^ Agreed. We are in the same boat- although D didn’t get in to UNC, but she applied to both schools. They are both great schools with bright, motivated students who generally do well balancing work & play. I could not see a good reason to pay $24000 a year (based on the amount the VA prepaid would cover for us) for Carolina when Virginia is roughly $9000. Happily, D saw it the same way. UVA was always her #1 but she did love UNC too. Very similar feel to both schools. My opinion? If you are torn, then let the money decide. Even if you’re full pay, its still so much more expensive to fo to UNC. If you need loans, that makes it worse. If you were an NC resident asking this, I’d say UNC all the way.

I wouldn’t pass up free tuition at UVA to pay more at UNC.

Agree with barrk. Unless UNC has something unique that it would be utterly impossible for you to do a UVA, save money and go to UVA.

UVA because it is a great school, and you will save lots of money.
