UNC Chapel Hill Alumna - Ask Me Anything :)

I graduated from UNC in 2012 and am happy to answer any/all questions about admissions, campus life, classes, professors, majors, etc. I majored in Psychology and also spent a semester studying abroad. I was heavily involved in undergraduate research and did an honors thesis which received highest honors.

So, yeah. Shoot!

hello tinder! I am an instate applicant and will be very exicited if I get accepted! I want to know how diversed is the campus since it is in the south? and what is the setting of the town? urban or suburb? Thank you!

So what are you up to now?

Did you get a job?

klkl3045 - Hi! The campus is pretty diverse. The South itself, in fact, is extremely diverse (much more so compared to the Northeast; having lived in both places, I can attest to that). Chapel Hill is a suburban town that is very very white, but it neighbors Durham, a diverse urban city with a strong art and foodie culture. The campus has lots of programs promoting diversity, like living-learning communities focused around having people of many different cultures sharing a floor in a dorm with weekly activities constructed with the purpose of sharing cultures. There are also language-based LLCs like the Chinese and Spanish Language Houses. Also there is a student union for any ethnic minority and religion you can think of. It’s still predominantly white, but I’d say it’s more diverse than Duke or NC State.

phonyreal98 and keepittoyourself - Yes, I got a job! I’m working full-time in research (scientific), and am currently applying to Ph.D. programs. I recommend getting involved with internships or undergraduate research as soon as you can, as this will enhance your chances on the job market. Oh, and apply summer before senior year; trust me, it’s the best time to do it.

I have visited Chapel Hill twice now since I am from Charlotte. My question is probably very irrelevant but what are some of the best things to do at campus ?

What are the dining commons like and what do people think of dining commons?

What’s the Greek life like at UNC?

What’s the nightlife like?

What’s the Christian community/culture like?

What’s the atmosphere like at UNC?

How diverse is UNC?

Where do most students like dorming? What are the popular dorms?

I know this wasn’t for me, but I figured I would give my opinion as well.

The dining halls are nice in my opinion. Top of Lenoir (North campus) is nicer but almost always more crowded. Rams (South campus) is great especially for lunch because not a lot of people go there. I think the food tastes good but it does get a little old eating the same stuff. I think they do a good job trying to mix it up at least.

I’m not a part of Greek life, so I can’t really comment on it. I know a lot of people who are involved and love it, but if its not your thing there’s at least a million other things to do on campus.

There are a ton of amazing Christian groups on campus. If you want to message me I can get you some more information, but I know there are a lot of great small groups that meet as well as services on campus on Sundays.

Franklin is the best place for nightlife, obviously. I’m not really into the partying so I’m not the best person to ask, but there’s never any shortage of things to do at night. There are lots of restaurants, bars, and people. YoPo is my personal favorite. It’s a lovely dumpy hole in the wall frozen yogurt place that you will most likely be introduced to in your first few days on campus. It’s delicious.

The most popular freshman dorm is probably HoJo (Hinton James). This is one of the loud highrises. Again, it depends what you like. All of the dorms are very social from my experience, but some are a lot louder than others. I don’t know if you’re a guy or a girl, but I live in Hardin which is one of the all girl dorms. I was originally completely against it and was put there randomly but now I love it. It’s the closest freshman dorm to North campus and because it’s all girls everyone is totally comfortable just walking around in pajamas or sweats, I love it. But you can still have guys in the dorm whenever you want. We have ‘visiting hours’ but as long as your roommates agree, nobody cares.

I think UNC is very diverse. I’ve seen so many new cultures since I’ve been here. You can immerse yourself in as much or as little diversity as you want.

I know I missed a few of your questions - I’m on my phone and can’t see your post when I reply. Sorry about that. If you have any other questions you want to ask I can definitely do my best to answer them!

Are there a lot of out of state students at UNC?
Are the classes small?
Is there a core curriculum?
What is the school spirit like?
Is the radio station/newspaper/etc popular? I’m planning on majoring in broadcast journalism!

Thank you for answering questions by the way, I appreciate it!

Several of these could be answered just by looking at the website.
