UNC is my number one choice. My senior year I’m taking APUSH and college writing as well as pathway classes and shadowing nurses at the local hospital. Trying to get my CNA certification in the spring to be able to work during the summer.
Thank you!!
UNC admissions for OOS students is very difficult. The acceptance rate for OOS students is under 20%, compared with about 50% for instate students. This is because UNC is required by state law to have a certain percentage of each class be from North Carolina (I think it’s like 80%+ but I’m not positive – you can probably find the answer somewhere online).
Because of the competitiveness of OOS admissions at UNC, it can be somewhat misleading to look at the stats of previously accepted applicants, since their website doesn’t separate instate/OOS applicant stats. However, lets take a look:
For 2015 the middle 50% of scores for accepted students on the old SAT was 600-710 for CR and 620-720 for Math. As you can see, your scores are already on the lower side (a 1330 on the new SAT is roughly equal to 1880 on the old SAT), plus when you factor in the competitiveness of OOS admissions, it’ll be a big reach school for you.
Still, it’s important to keep in mind that UNC has holistic admissions. No one here will be able to tell you how the subjective parts of your application will be viewed by the admissions committee. I think the Carolina admissions blog said it best:
Your EC’s are pretty good, but you’re GPA is a little low for OOS (I’m a fellow swimmer and also interested in medicine btw). You should probably try to boost your test scores. Have you tried the ACT? Are you good enough to be recruited for swimming at UNC?

Good luck!!!
Thank you so much! I’m not quite good enough to be recruited, definitely would be one of their best club swimmers though. I’ll probably retake the sat and maybe even try the act
