Has anyone who DID receive a letter from excel NOT received an email about it today? I’m checking to see if I should still hold out hope that I might get an email (I have gotten nothing in the mail, I live in Maryland)

I live in South Florida and received a letter in the mail today about acceptance into the Excel@Carolina program, and I received an email late this afternoon to submit the survey. I still haven’t received my acceptance package from UNC, but I suspect it will come soon.

@4333jc if you don’t mind my asking, what are your stats like? I’m trying to figure out if I have a shot at excel or if I should give up hope

@creuland - I don’t think you should give up hope even if you don’t get an Excel letter because I think you can take Honors classes at UNC even if you’re not in Honors Carolina, and I think I read somewhere that you can apply to get into Honors Carolina if you’re excelling after your 1st year. I also suspect that there are a lot of great opportunities at UNC outside of Excel if you seek them out. Plus, don’t forget that you have to be super just to get accepted at UNC so you’ve already accomplished a lot just by getting in!

Here are my stats:
- ACT: 34 (36 English; 35 Reading; 30 Math; 34 Science)
- SAT English 780; Writing 760; Math 690
- SAT World History: 740
- Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9
- Weighted GPA: 4.65
- Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): school doesn’t rank
- AP (place score in parenthesis): 5s on World History and Psychology; 4 on Eng Lit.
- IB: 5 on Math SL; 5 on Environmental Systems SL
- Senior Year Course Load: IB French SL; IB Art HL; IB Theory of Knowledge, IB Global Politics HL; IB English HL; AP AB Calculus

are excel letters still coming?

Guys I’ve seen a 110-point rise in my SAT score (2130 to 2240 and an 800 in Critical Reading) and about 7-8% in my GPA since I applied; is there any way that I can ask the admissions office to reconsider me for Excel?

All true. Any spaces left in honors classes are open to anyone. You can apply after your first semester with a minimum GPA and a professor recommendation. And of course there really are tons of academic, research and social activities available that will surely peak your interest and challenge you.

Hi guys! Question here… Got deferred from UNC and received a letter where they said, “…we must defer final action on your application until we have received your midyear grades and read the applications of our second-deadline candidates… In making our final decision, we will consider everything you have already submitted to us…”
I reported my midyear grades online, just like they asked me to. Should I send them an email/letter telling them that I’m thankful they’re still considering me and that I’m still interested? Or do I just do nothing and wait?
Super shocked they didn’t flat out reject me. My SAT score is pretty low and I answered the “Why do you do what you do?” essay with 400 words about my pets and 100 words on “how their personalities are like mine.”–probably the worst essay I’ve ever written :/

saratoga37, you should not have to do anything else at this time. Just check your Connect Carolina account to see if you have outstanding items remaining. It may take a while for them to register receiving your mid-year grades,

Congratulations on making it this far. In spite of your assessment of scores and essays, UNC must see something interesting in your application. Best of luck to you!

Anyone have any information about financial aid packages that are offered to upper middle class level students? My parents make about $108,000 per year, but they still can’t afford $20,000+ per year. Concerned I won’t receive any need based help and loans won’t cover everything. Plus, even if I could, I am scared to pay for my education completely in loans. I know a lot of students pay for everything with loans, but they scare me. I don’t want to be stuck with $700 a month loan payments once I graduate.

There is a UNC Net Price Calculator that helps students see how much and what kind of aid they are likely to receive if they attend UNC. Here’s the link: <a href=“Net Price Calculator”>Net Price Calculator;

@4332jc- thanks for the link. Just like I thought, no help for me. My parents are expected to pay full price and we don’t have it.

has anyone’s to do list in connect carolina got updated? mine shows financial aid item today. but it says it is for aid year 2015, shouldnt it be year 2014~2015?

also it asked for my parents’ and my tax transcripts. i understand that if i dont need to file a tax return i just sign the letter that comes with it. but my parents filed theirs 2 days ago and it says that it will take 3 weeks for irs to receive that info…this is quite confusing…can someone help me to sort things out and make some clearifications? any comments will be appreciated!!

I am not sure what is means by “asked for my parents…transcripts” but I will try to shed some light (whatever light I am able to that is). For UNC, you submit FAFSA and CSS Profile by March 1st. FAFSA should be easier to fill out because they have less information to fill out and if you parents filed taxes online, then they can use the IRS Data Retreival Tool which is basically a tool that copies and pastes information from their tax filings into the FAFSA fields. Your parents can just use the most up to date information for CSS Profile that they have by that date. I know that UNC-CH is not a IDOC institution so that means you do not have to deal with that. When you mean that they ask for your parent’s transcripts do you mean via email, mail or fax? Does it say? I would imagine that everything is due by March 1st because that is what UNC’s financial deadline seems to be for everything unless you have seen different.

My suggestion at this point is to call the financial aid office and ask about this and explain your situation. FYI, I do not have anything under my “To Dos.”

I submitted my updated FAFSA yesterday but I didnt use the IRS retrieval tool. Maybe thats why. I believe my parents filed the tax return eletronically. Under to dos I need to send them three more documentations. One of them being my parents tax transcript. I think we need to order one online for the IRS but the website says that it will take at least 3 weeks for IRS to process my return…but my parents just filed their return 3 days ago…

klkl3045, I am guessing that you were selected for verification. The government requires colleges to verify a certain amount of the FAFSA applications. That you are being asked means nothing. It is just part of the checks and balances built into the system.

If I remember right, I had to do this last year. I contacted the FA department and asked if I used the IRS Data Retrieval Tool would they still need the transcript. They said no but I sent it anyway. DO NOT take my word email them. They tend to be very responsive.

If you have completed the FAFSA and Profile by the deadline then I wouldn’t lose sleep over the verification step. Just get it done ASAP. As long as the FAFSA is correct it shouldn’t impact anything. I doubt that the verification step has to be done by 3/1 but only UNC can give you that answer.

noname87 thank you for your response! I emailed the financial aid office yesterday right after I found out I have to submit these documents. I think the office is closed today due to the inclement weather so hopefully I will get an answer sometime next week. On my connect carolina it also says that “Please note that DRT and the IRS Tax Transcript are not available until three weeks after the tax return is filed” so I supposed I will not be able to use the data retrieval tool or order a tax transcript from the IRS any time during this time frame since my parents only filed their return 3 days ago.

if it doesnt bother you, do you mind tell me did you get your financial aid package from Carolina on time on time since you were chosen to do the verification last year? like did you still get it around late march or other later time?

thank you for helping me put!!

Based on what is posted on the FA board, the DRT could be available about a week after filing if you filed electronically.

I don’t remember the time frame from last year. I filed my taxes on 1/2 so verification was not a issue.

oh gotcha. I made correction after my dad gave me the tax return but when I tried to see if I can use the DRT on FAFSA it says “successfully processed” so I guess I dont have access to my Fafsa application right now.
