Let me know what you guys think of my chances.

^ ndabunka - Just being honest, I’d say UNC is a reach school for your son. My son applied last year and did not get accepted, and had similar stats … slightly lower on the test scores (SAT 1850 / ACT 28) but higher on the GPA (UW 3.5, W 3.96). Plus, he had 3 legacy alumni, was a member of the NHS, an Eagle Scout, varsity swim team, and one of the more competitive schools in Wake County (in state).

That said, it never hurts to try. My son goes to Univ. of South Carolina now on a merit scholarship with in state tuition and loves it. I’m still following this forum because now my daughter applied to UNC for EA so hopefully she’ll get accepted. Unfortunately, UNC is not her first choice but we’re hoping she’ll change her mind.

Coleman4 - Thanks for the ‘real world’ reply. My son has also applied to Univ. of South Carolina as they have an excellent IB program there as well as Japanese & Asian studies so it’s a close 2nd on his list. My niece graduated from there with honors and will be graduating from law school in a few weeks so it’s not exactly alumni but (I think) he did include her experience there in his essay so perhaps that will carry some weight. Based on Naviance, it doesn’t look like should have any problem getting into USC but being out of state it would cost us more but not nearly as much as his 3rd choice, Davidson (about 5 miles away as the crow flies). He’s already been accepted by one college and given a $9K scholarship so he has “one in the bag” that he would honestly LOVE to attend but that his mother would go crazy if he went to it (because it’s SO FAR away…2,800 miles away)

My essays are probably some of my best work ever written. I’m huge into writing and spent all summer writing them.
Amazing letters of recommendation.

I will be taking the AP Lit, AP Human Geo, and AP Psych exams at the end of the year; however I took AP USH and AP Lang. my junior year and AP Gov my sophomore year. I didn’t take the exams then because of the concussion.
I’m hopefully looking to go into their School of Journalism or a creative writing major.

I was committed to play Division I soccer but had to decline because of post-concussion syndrome, which ended up being the topic of my Common Application essay, and was also the reason for my lower ACT/SAT test scores.

If you guys can let me know my chances, it would be ENORMOUSLY APPRECIATED Thanks in advance! :)

Just so everyone knows, being related to alumni does NOT help at all if you live in NC

Ok guys, could you please chance me? I literally had a nightmare last night that I wasn’t accepted, so I was forced to go to App state and live with my parents for the next 4 years of my life.

Anyway, instate, white male, EA

Horrible, abysmal ECs. Just gonna throw that out there. Get it over with.

So yeah. If this was academics alone, I would be pretty confident. Its my horrible ECs (or lack of) that worry me. Practically all I have is beta club. Im an idiot for not taking more. Chances?

@severage, I think you’re good! Your SAT is great for Carolina. BTW, what you said about App is hilarious. I have those same nightmares about living with my parents and attending UNCA… ick.

Thanks! Im just worried about my ECs…

Recommendations should have been great.
FYI, I did get a C in AP US History, and I’ve gotten a total of 6 B’s.
What are my chances?

^Thought I need to add a few things.
I got invited to UNC’s Science Carolina and the Academic Days, which I attended.
Also, my mom and her dad graduated from UNC and my whole family is UNC alumni.
My high school is in Wake County and is extremely competitive (people with 4.5 GPAs are ranked in the 50’s).
I told them that I plan to go into Biology with minors in Marine Science and American Indian studies.

All of you guys worry too much. Whats the point of chance me anyways? Most of the people who come on here are motivated individuals that will succeed wherever the guy. So stop stressing guys

*wherever they go

i completely agree with you. once upon a time i created a chance thread for myself and people said that those schools are “reaches” for me, couple weeks later i got accepted into those schools. im my opinion i think their answers can only be served as references but applicants should not be taking these answers seriously.

I agree with above^^ (btw im a new collegeconfidentialer and i applied UNC EA as well)
When we start applying to upper epshelon schools like top 20,25+ and when they are private wiht not many spots and MANYYY applicants, its impossible to really determine chances that accuractely. Especially for the top 10 schools where rates are like 12,13% and less where most of the applicants fall under a single numerical range and after that, we don’t know exactly what the class applications will look like that year…so you never know… then again I also admit to doing a few hahaha

Also, anyone here familiar with the Honors Carolina and scholarships process for EA applicants? im in state

There’s no application for either. You will automatically be considered for them when you apply.

@ncbug19 i know that already. i meant like timeframes and dates. when we find out, how we find out, etc…

How does UNC usually let people know their admission decision? is it through email or on the CarolinaConnect?
