UNC Chapel Hill Early Action Fall 2023

Did you receive aid with acceptance?

Yes! We are traveling tomorrow and visiting on Monday. Where else is your student considering? Mine is between (at this point) UNC, UCLA and USC Marshall

Mine is between UNC, UCLA & USC Dornslife. We are headed to CA over Spring Break to visit UCLA and see USC again.

At this point he has ruled out UVA (Echols Scholar) and is considering Bowdoin while waiting for a few more decisions.

In the new ratings for undergraduate CS, UNC is 24 and UMass Amherst is 29 but you are right GTech is still #5.

Mine has to decide between UW Madison and UNC for CS. UW is definitely rated higher for CS but UNC seems to be a better university overall. Any thoughts?

Is anyone else unable to access their portal now?

D23 had the same decision to make. At UNC, the admission is to the college, and not directly to the CS major. Students interested in CS have to take CS pre-reqs in freshman/sophomore years, meet GPA requirements, and then go through an opaque, holistic admissions process (with essays etc) in order to be admitted into the CS major. Our daughter is not willing to take this risk, so it was an easy decision for her to choose UW Madison.

UNC is an excellent school. I wish they had a more deterministic path for students interested in CS.

I didn’t realize it was this difficult to get admitted into CS at UNC. Writing essays again doesn’t seem to be very appealing! Thank you for sharing.

I cannot say anything about which school is better for CS, but my son is currently a junior at UW Madison in the business school and absolutely loves it! My youngest also got in to UW Madison business but think he is preferring UNC, USC or UCLA at this point.

I know it’s very individual, but interested on your take between these three schools. We are from CA and was preferring to go out of state, but direct admit to USC Marshall is very nice.

Does anyone know the statistics of kids who get accepted to the business school at UNC- or what the process specifically looks like? You meet the minimum grades and write a compelling essay and you get in- or are you really competing with others for a spot?

My daughter loved USC when we visited last spring. Loved everything about it- not in the best area off campus but that’s ok. She loves California as well! She really liked Duke & UNC when we visited NC a couple of weeks back. Chapel Hill is a great area- lots of restaurants right off campus. UNC’s campus was nice- good tour. The one drawback for her is the amount of in state students- only about 18% are OOS at UNC so she is concerned about that. Will see UCLA over spring break & then she will decide. It’s very big so I think she will either love it or hate it!

That in-state percentage was a drawback for my D as well, and we live in North Carolina.

Coming from NYC, my son has friends from all around the globe. The large in-state NC percentage is a nice change for him. Having friends, all from one area, would be a new experience for him-a bit of a hometown feel while still being in a small city. Visiting UVA, UNC and UFL this Spring Break and UCSD afterwards. Though currently, he is still strongly connected to UNC-Chapel Hill. He loved the students and campus last time we visited.

I do not think it is difficult to get into CS at UNC, it is just no longer automatic.

I hope so. We need to decide and the thought of another admission process next year with all the works just sounds too tiring.

Is there an admitted student day at UNC? From what I can see all the admitted student tours are fully booked.

The admission rate is usually around 50%. Last year it was 45%. Students typically apply at the beginning of sophomore year.

About 50% get in, so yes competitive. Be sure you are active in clubs on campus, take the pre- reqs, prepare for interview and line up some kind of business work or internship after your first year.
