Hey,
I'm hoping to transfer to UNC Chapel Hill next year as a junior and I wanted to know what the fraternities are like there. Is there a diverse mix of kids in Greek life? Is it possible/common for junior transfers to join? Also, when do people usually rush (orientation, beginning of semester, etc)? I appreciate the input.
Thanks

I’m a current student at UNC, so I’ll give you some input.

Rush takes place the first two weeks of each semester, but fall rush is much more active than spring rush. Some of the more elite frats don’t rush in the spring. Of course, most pledges will be freshman, but there are sometimes quite a few sophomores who pledge. However, you’d probably be the only junior pledging any particular frat, though I’ve heard some exchange students pledge as juniors. As for diversity, it really depends on which frat you pledge. Not surprisingly, most frats here are composed of mostly white southern guys, though there are a small number of de facto indian, asian (non-indian), hispanic and black frats. However, there’s still quite a few minorities who pledge mostly white frats.

Hope that helps, and good luck with your application.

Look/ask on the UNC-CH subforum.

thanks for the reply swaggerer. Also, do you know if hazing really bad in a lot of them? I’m at a small northern school with a lot of frats and I know hazing is commonplace, but I’m curious as to how much worse it is at a big southern school like UNC.

And entomom- I will do that
thanks
