UNC Chapel Hill In-State Deferred

I have a friend whose son was deferred today (in-state, Class of 2019). Who has details/anecdotal stories about in-state students (from previous years, obviously) who were deferred then later accepted? What were their “stats”, how long did they wait to hear, what things did they do while waiting, etc? If there is already a thread about this on CC, please point me in that direction and thanks!

I see that a lot of folks are checking out this Discussion but no one is posting, so, thinking it’s of interest to those Deferred… anyone out there who can respond with info/stats/anecdotes of being accepted after deferred? I did find on the UNC website that except for grades from this past High School semester and MAYBE test scores from the Jan SAT, UNC Admissions doesn’t accept any add’l info from students. Self-reporting of grades is mandatory so that’s a biggie. Any parents or students out there with info to add??

I’ve never seen anything on this. UNC has published data on getting off the waitlist after RD (which was pretty low in the past), but not deferred to my knowledge. Anecdotally I knew a OOS from my HS deferred from EA, wait listed from RD and ultimately did not get in. As you know OOS at UNC is a whole other deal given the first year cap.

UNC has sent out a blog today. It said Unfortunately, it’s impossible to predict at this point. On our FAQs, you can see that we ended up offering admission to 379 deferred students last year and 346 the previous year. So submit your mid year grades (hopefully they are good) and it said by end of March you should hear something. Good Luck!!

@college67, haha, I see that I responded to a post of yours in another tread. I started this discussion for a friend whose son was deferred. She hasn’t been as “obsessed” as I was over the whole process so she turned to me to see what I knew about his chances of getting in. My son is graduating from Carolina in May, yay! I pop back on CC every year at this time b/c I remember how crazy I was back in 2011, checking and rechecking to see if he had been Accepted… I try to share advice to folks about what happens when the announcement finally rolls out online, etc. Our year it was CRAZY.

Anyway, thanks for the input from you re: current info sent from UNC on deferred status students. I personally know 2 in-state kids who got in after being deferred, but in both cases it was June before they were notified… both had already put down deposits to go elsewhere but were ecstatic to get in no matter how late. However, waiting until June would be very disheartening for my friend’s son (as it would have been for mine) and I rather doubt he would wait as he’s already been accepted at other good schools.

Thanks again and congrats on your son’s acceptance. As the kids on the Twitter feed are saying: it’s a GDTBATH!
