Not to mention, Duke is notorious for having some of the rudest students & fans, and I feel like DukeAlumnus2003 embodies that.

Back to original point, however…my story is a little like PackMom’s. My dad is from Winston-Salem, moved up to Michigan for his last two years of high school. He decided to come back down here to go to Wake Forest and come back home…and didn’t enjoy it at all. He ended up transferring, for reasons other than that, but he felt that it wasn’t as good of a school as everyone made it out to be. I think there are people who Wake is PERFECT for, but if it’s not for you, you’ll hate being there.

Already? Unless you received a likely letter from Duke (and it’s slightly early for those), I’m not sure how you’d be admitted at all three at this point.

I agree with one poster who said that Wake is perfect for a particular type of student, UNC is much more diverse. Personally, I think the UNC campus and surrounding area is trashy in comparison to Wake’s. But finances should take a major role, and OP HAS to decide if they would fit in at Wake.

UNC’s campus is beautiful, and Chapel Hill is one of a kind, but Carborro (i.e. Chapel Hill west) is awful and is overrun with hippies. I can easily see how you would jump to that conclusion if you were exposed to that part of the area.

Personally, I think both UNC and Wake have gorgeous campuses.

LOL. To each his own, I suppose. I personally like Carrboro a lot, and Cat’s Cradle is pretty awesome (though definitely not much to look at). Weaver Street isn’t too bad either.

Warblers- Here in my area of NJ, Duke rules! UNC is thought of as hard to get into because NC takes mostly instate kids, while Duke is known as hard to get into because they are just so selective academically. Only the very top kids have gone to Duke from my area.

p.s. I have heard nothing but nice things about the “Carrboro Hippies,” enough that we are checking it out this summer!

National reputation for Duke is best of all NC schools. If you stay in NC, UNC is great but the prestige drops drastically outside the borders. Other states think their state school is the best.

I’d have to disagree on the second point. I’ve lived all over the country (and abroad) and everyone I’ve talked to knew of UNC’s prestige. UNC is easily considered one of the top 5 public schools in the country, and that remains the same no matter where you go.

If I might just give my two cents…I think you have to visit each campus to determine which is best for you, and completely throw “national reputation” out of your list of considerations. Get in where you fit in. When you look back on your college years, the perceived prestige of your university won’t stand out in your mind; you’ll remember the professors that inspired you and the lifelong friendships you made. I visited UNC, Duke, and Wake Forest, and chose to apply early decision to WFU because it’s got big sports, a beautiful campus, a strong (yet generally accepting) Greek system, and is going to provide me with a seriously valuable education.

As a side note, rarely have I ever seen/heard Wake Forest students cutting down their “rival” schools like Duke and UNC seem to do all the time.

I am in the same exact situation as you are. I have to decide in about 2 weeks and I have yet to visit both universities (I’m going next week). Which did you end up selecting to attend?
